My nephew ships out June 24th to MCRD San Diego. My grandpa was with 1/1 on Guadalcanal and then cross decked over to 3rd Battalion 25 Marines and got shot in the throat on Iwo Jima. Nastiest voice you have ever heard.
My dad enlisted to keep from getting drafted and did three tours in the Nam, first with 1/3 and then with 2 tours with first Force Recon. He didn’t make it through his third tour before he got eff’d up and ended up with the Navy Cross.
I joined in 1994, because I wanted my dad to be proud of me. Ended up as Chief Scout in our STA platoon and was in one of the first helos that went into the Stan in 01. I did stuff I hope my wife never finds out about. Navy Com with V.
Now my nephew thinks he has to follow. Want to tell him our family has done enough but At the same time I proud because while he doesn’t have a clue what he is getting into he is still willing to step up.
