Our city house has an insert and it does a good job for the living room and kitchen. But the downside is it pulls air from inside the house so you get drafts. Our lake house also has an insert but, it pulls its air from the attic. That thing will flat burn you out of there.
If starting from scratch a wood stove is much more efficient than a fire place. We have had them in two houses and depending on how you run the pipe and ceiling height you can heat the entire house. I love my fireplace cause I can heat the house when needed or just make a comfort fire on a cool night.
My fireplace has the fan but it is utterly useless. I've pulled it completely apart and found no reason why, but it is useless. Next year I'm adding on and I'm going to get one of the outside wood burning units that ducts into the house.
We are remodeling a property we just bought and adding a second fireplace. Dale and Mike D, sounds like I need more info on this unit you guys are talking about.
We have a 40” double sided astria fireplace with heatilator. We were without power for 3 days so obviously couldn’t turn the fans on, unfortunately. We run off propane though and after lighting it and letting it run for about a half hour to get really hot, it did great. We kept our whole 2900 sq ft house within 3 degrees of normal thermostat setting. When you can run the fans though it will run you out of the house.
I’ve burned 3/4’s of a rick of wood in the past 5 days and the only thing my fireplace has been good for is sticking your hands in it to warm them up and the kids roasting marshmallows.
