Default Look at how much money we saved!

Am I the only one that hates that phrase?

Look at how much money we saved.

Yeah, but look at how much you are spending. If you didn’t spend that money then you would have saved a whole lot more. Maybe it is just a way for people to justify the money they spent. I dunno…….. Anyone else feel the same way?

My wife was the world’s worst about that, 20+ years ago.

Babe, it was on sale!!!!

Hon, you still spent money that didn’t need to be spent, and on something we really didn’t need.

On sale does not equal free. I can not even begin to estimate how many times I told her exactly that.

.....it was on "Sale".....

I know a lovely lady who falls for this one every time.

At least it makes her feel better when I ask about it....

You know they laugh it off in the sewing circle about how gullable we are to buy the "on sale" excuse......

Don’t get me wrong, she could question me about archery oriented purchases I make, but she doesn’t because she hunts too so I always look out for her when buying.

That said, it’s definitely more affordable now than it was then because we both make significantly more many now than we did in our early - late 20’s but I absolutely still budget the non essential spending.

My mom use to tell my dad when I was a kid this all the time and 1 time she told him, look at all these shirts they were buy 1 get one free, look at all the money I saved.
He looked her dead in the eyes and he said, think about how much money you would save if you didn't buy any

I've used this phrase a time or 2

If you don’t budget for the non-essential stuff then that is how a LOT of people end up in financial ruin, regardless of what your income is or how large your bank account is.

heard a guy tell a story about his wife coming home with two very expensive dresses she bought. She laid them out on the bed and said "how do you like these?"

He got mad and said "we can't afford two new dresses"

She said "ok, I understand. I will take one of them back."

He said thank you thinking he had saved some money.

All she ever wanted in the first place was the one dress.

My beautiful wife, God bless her as she is now in heaven, use to drive across town to save a quarter on a gallon of milk. I would say something to her and she would say, but look how much money I saved. Would give my right arm to hear her say that again.

Here is a trick for you young guys. Buy your bow or gun and don't let her see it for at least a day. When she asked about it you can honestly say, "Oh I have had that"

What’s the saying? A woman will buy something she doesn’t need just because it’s on sale. A man will pay twice what something is worth if he really needs it? Something like that lol

When you go hunt take two gun cases with a gun only in one of them. Come home with the same two gun cases. Both with a gun of course.

But most of the time* take what each person has bought and try to resell it.
You get near nothing on the things the woman has bought.

I try my best to explain this to my wife when she says "But you spend money also"... Yes, but we can actually sell the ammo for MORE than I paid for it and the guns for around what we paid, how much can you sell those 10 pairs of shoes, socks, shirts, books etc for 10% of what you paid?

If that's not enough you can't make/save money on what they buy. Hunting/fishing at least offsets a tiny portion of household costs.

I joke that I married my wife because she is cheaper than me. If we need something then we look for it on sale. It is still amazing that after you buy it how much you really didn’t need it. We are planning on retiring to the country and in the process of deciding on the stuff we now don’t need. It is almost overwhelming. Going to be a heck of a sale.

While I am admittedly a member of the fairer sex, I’m not much of a spender.

I look at it like this: There are a few things in life I enjoy holding onto and watching it grow. Money is one of them.

My wife falls into this HEB scenario as well.

Another scenario is my wife will be returning something to the department store, only to come home with something else. Oh honey, I got a great deal on this new dress. The catch is not only did the store provide credit for the original return, they received more money out of my wife's pocket as the new dress that was "on sale" cost more than what was being returned. Ugh.

With that said, I'm with some of the guys here. There's some battles worth taking on and for me, this isn't one of them.

Yeah...I'm in the boat of "my wife get's what she wants (which isn't a whole lot honestly) and I don't say a peep" crowd. I have the spending crown in my household. It is all budgeted spending, but that budget leans heavily in my direction.
