My son is 13 and will be turning 14 in a couple weeks. He started hunting with me when he was 4. He shot his first pig when he was 6 and his first deer when he was 7. He’s managed to shoot a ton of hogs, does, spikes, quite a few free range axis, aoudad, and some nice bull elk. He’s never killed a whitetail buck bigger than a spike till this year. I can guarantee you it wasn’t from lack of trying. He started hunting by himself last year. This year he told me that he wanted to set up his own stands and feeders and do everything himself. I told him that was fine and I didn’t do much more than drive him where he needed to go. Two weeks into bow season he shot his first one in Smith County with his bow. It was a 13.5 inch 8 point. I can’t put into words how excited and how proud of himself he was. A few weeks later he got a second one with his rifle in Anderson county which was a 15.5 inch 8 point. Then, this past weekend in San Saba county he shot a 17 inch wide 7 point with a couple kickers off his brow tines with his rifle. Those three with the two does he got tagged him out for the season. The bucks aren’t huge “trophy bucks”, but they’re sure enough trophies to him. I could not be prouder of him and who he’s growing up to be.
