My wife wants to go stay in Fredericksburg this weekend for our anniversary. Being from East Tx, I know nothing about that general area. I understand that some folks go there because of the wineries which doesn't interest the wife and I. What else is there to do within 30 mins or so from there? Anything around there that is a must do or a must see? Any restaurants that are hidden gems?
Thanks |

Alamo Springs Restaurant and Old German Bakery. Get there early. Pacific War Museum can take a whole day to enjoy. Lots and lots of girly shops to follow the Mrs. around in. Trade Days is interesting as well.

This here. Make sure you get the jalapeño cheese sourdough bun and enjoy watching the bats coming out of the cave while you eat the best burger in Tx.

Walk up and down Main for all the shopping, if your wife enjoys that. Art, gift shops, clothes, jewelry, etc... Tons of good restaurants.
The Rock Box (if they're open during COVID) puts on great shows. There's usually lots of live music here and there around town. LBJ Ranch isn't too far. They were shut down due to COVID back in the summer. Probably still are. You can still drive through and see some stuff. Just can't go inside the museum part if they're closed. |

Pasta Bella is a hidden little gem just off the main drag
Not sure if it’s seasonal or not but watching the bats fly out at Old Tunnel State Park is cool Last edited by bboswell; 01-19-2021 at 01:41 PM. |

Enchanted rock can be hail to climb if you have bad knees. We stayed at My Country Inn. Not the one in town but the one on North Llano. It’s a 200 acre ranch that loaded with white tail and axis. And they will come to a bag of corn. Lots of fun and nice accommodations.

Another fun place is the Rustlin' Rob's store. They have 100's of samples that are fun to try. Though with covid they may have stopped that, who knows. |

Rustlin' Rob's is a great place to go and fill up on a lot of good samples. They were open when I was there a few weeks ago. My wife and I got a couples massage at Above and Beyond day spa. Very relaxing and moderately priced.

Alamo Springs is a must, any of their burgers are great!! First time I went there it was raining cats and dogs. The low water areas were flooded and we could not leave right away. Went back and stayed long enough to have dinner as well. Great place.

Rustlin Rob's as mentioned . The Christmas store. The owner of the Christmas store use to own an B&B no tv. Little cabin. Fireplace. Drink great beer while walking down the street. Enchanted Rock is great to hike up to the top. Llano has Cooper's BBQ. Llano has a couple antique stores on either side of the bridge. Nimitz as mentioned. If your wife loves candles take her to Circle E candles and prepare to bring your wallet

Obviously COVID may have changed the crowds, but plan to eat early wherever you plan to eat. We will make a reservation for ~5:30. Walk in with no crowd, walk out to see sometime 30 people waiting to dine.
When the wife and I go we typically like to get a B&B a block or so off the main drag, park the car and walk. We partake in a few beverages in the evening while enjoying live music. Don't have to worry about where we parked or having to drive. I agree with the Alamo Springs burger. Understand that it is off the beaten path double digit miles outside of town. The drive is really nice, IMO. Not trying to discourage you, just make sure you give yourself time to go enjoy. |

Outside of other suggestions:
Drive over to Kerrville, if they’re still open to the public you can check out the James Avery Museum. For food in FBurg, Hilltop Cafe, German Bakery and Restaurant, and I’ve heard Catfish Haven. Can also check out Wildflower Farm. |

One of the best top end meals in the town is Cabernet Grill.
I rank it only slightly higher than Crossroads. It’s more quaint but lacks the walk up convenience of Crossroads. Make reservations early. |

Spent a few days in that area for our anniversary pre-rona. Spent a night at the YO and did the game tour. I liked being out there and just sitting out looking at all the exotics with no place to be.

Thanks for some great suggestions that we didn't know about. We are leaving Friday afternoon and coming back Sunday evening. This trip is mostly for her as she has been wanting to go over there for a weekend for a while. She is such a great sport about me being gone hunting all the time, I want to make sure she gets to do the things that she likes while we are there.

There is a pizza place on main street that has good pizza as well with outdoor dining. It’s going to be on the west end of town past Marketplatz I believe. And cold beer.

My wife is a teacher and wears one daily so she will when asked. I'm more stubborn and have yet to have to wear one since this all began. Even when we were in North Carolina where they were very strict about it, I never did. I just showed them my card if asked and they said ok. I just don't want this thread to turn into a mask debate as that isn't what it is about. We have received some great suggestions on places to visit and I'd like to keep it on that track.

We booked a pretty cool place a few mins North of town. I had found this one and another place within walking distance to everything but I let my wife choose and she liked this one better.

Wineries:
1. August Vin 2. Grape Creek 3. 4.0 Restaurants: 1. Nicer Options (Would probably try to get reservations) a. August E b. Vaudeville c. Navajo Grill d. Cabernet Grill e. Otto’s 2. Burger/Pizza a. Hondo’s - Burger b. Sozial House - Pizza c. West End Pizza - Pizza (May be closed) d. Pecan Grove - Burgers e. Alamo Springs - Burgers 3. Other good options: a. Old German Bakery (good breakfast) b. Hill Top Café (not as fancy, but cool atmosphere and good food. A little bit outside of town). c. Altstadt Brewery d. Auslander e. Woerner Warehouse f. Altdorf g. Crossroads Saloon h. Backwoods BBQ Fburg went from having around 6 active cases of COVID to over 100 active cases within about a month back in November and has held steady at over 100 cases. Currently has over 150 cases. However, this isn't surprising as it seems that most of the people that are walking down main street aren't wearing a mask. Last edited by TB80; 01-20-2021 at 10:50 AM. |
