So Iím sitting on top of my ranger guarding a teal pond, already popped a couple of hogs at another pond using my Wraith ((video after daylight) but gonna need waders to go look for them so thatís a daylight job.

While sitting up here feeding the mosquitoes Iíd thought Iíd point out that itís wise to be as spontaneous as you can be while chasing them. Since Iíve bought my first thermal from Jason. Itís been my habit too head out as the sun is going down and hunt till I was sleepy, usually 12-1:30AM.

The hogs figured this out.

So this morning I got up at 3AM and went out to these ponds. As I was slow rolling/scanning the first pond (didnít think anything would be there because a skunk in the road forced me to rev the ranger and pass him quickly) I spot several pigs in the pond.

Now hereís a trick I learned in South Texas, the minute you spot them most people charge and youíll send them flying for cover.

Kill the engine and let it roll to a stop.

No brake lights, no slam it into park just kill and roll. Those hogs immediately stopped and went back to rooting. I eased down the road and shot I know two or three and for sure killed one. We used to stop them this way while spot lighting fields and 9/10 of the time theyíd be right where the light was when we turned it back on.

Reeeeeeeeeally wish I still worked down there with the gear I got now, would of made work ALOT easier

We donít do anything except keep driving when we spot them. Drive with headlights on and everything. Spot em with thermal and keep rolling. once weíre a decent distance (few hundred yards) we start think about our approach and their evacuation direction. We absolutely keep wind in our favor, but if possible we line ourselves up with excellent follow up shot potential. Itís not hard to drop 10+ pigs per sounder this way. Weíve done it quite a few times. The trick is to keep your rifle running

Last two times we did this my buddy had his rifle jam on the first round. I still dropped 7-8 myself each time, but we couldíve easily been at 12-15 with him shooting as well. Haha

Good point about keeping the guns running. I had a loaner last trip as did another guy and both jammed first shot. That said, any way to practice moving shots other than hogs? I tend to jerk the trigger on follow ups which could be solved with more trigger time to some degree but would like to practice leading. Running a flat trigger now that itís my setup hoping that helps as well

Do you shoot supported or free handed? Free handed I have to concentrate more to squeeze. I normally run a Leofoto 364 tripod with ballhead and arca Mount. The tripod is amazingly steady, and allows me to focus more on shooting then holding steady.

Freehand from a sitting position in most cases. I have a Tripod setup I need to swap the head for a ball head.

You will not find a further shining IR light then our Coyote Cannon light and there is not even a close second. With the Coyote Cannon and the Pulsar you should be able to identify animals out to around 1000 yards. Another option would be our 66LRX light as it will allow you to identify to around 600 yards. As always, we give 10% off to TBH members, just send me a PM and I will send you a coupon code for 10% off. Here is a link to our Website. http://www.sniperhawglights.com/category-s/1831.htm

Looking for some help.... Ok Iím totally new to this but I have a birthday coming up and the wife always wants to know what I want. After going through the post is it safe to say the wraith is the best bang for the buck right now around the $500 dollar mark. I will be using it for hogs and coyotes out to say 200yrds in east Tx. I want to see details so not sure I want a Thermal right now. Any advise or guidance is much appreciated.

Anybody with the pulsar axiom 30 that has had issues with the battery? I bought mine thru the TBH group buy. Thought I had not got the battery in the charger good as it only showed half charge in the unit, but I let it charge all day and still only half charge. Planned on buying a second battery anyway but just wondered if anybody else had any problems.

If the Axiom uses the ISP5 battery packs like some of the XP and XQs I’ve had issues with a brand new battery pack as well. Got a brand new XP38 with new battery. The battery would never take a charge. My buddy is a distributor for Pulsar, so he just swapped it out for me. Said he’d deal with them.

Thermal and cell cameras sure make killing hogs easy. The 7.62 x 39 round continues to impress as well

I run a 10.5Ē radical firearms upper on one and a 16Ē palmetto state on another. Itís getting hard to find the PSA uppers now since they are pushing their KS-47s.

No issues with feeding on either gun and they are suppressed. I run C product mags and use enhanced firing pins. Never had a light primer strike

Everything Iíve read leans toward the c product mags being the best. Itís all Iíve ever tried and they have worked great. Iíve got 3 - 30rd, 1 - 28rd and 1 - 20rd mag. Lots of the time when you hear of guys having issues with 7.62 x 39s in the AR platform itís Magazine related

The C-products mags are good to go in the 7.62x39. Tula also makes a 154 gr. SP that is an absolute hammer on pigs. It runs about 11 bucks for 40 rounds. I bought a Bear Creek side charger upper for use with my thermal. So far it runs flawlessly.

Iím running a standard upper in 7.62x39 on a spikes lower if it helps. Make sure you 7.62 guys carry an extra extractor. Prone to breaking given the larger case diameter Iím told. Cheap insurance for under $20. Plan to give mine a good workout the next few nights

Did he give reasons why? I had a pretty strong opinion on the night vision scopes after the first one I tried I could see the hog better by moonlight then the scope.

Bought the Wraith and I was floored at the clarity with just the IR light it comes with. While Iíll still run thermal as my main setup the wraith can keep up with thermals out to 100-150 if the field is open IMO.

The Wraith is by far the best option for $500 or less. The only options are the ATN X-Sights, which I would not advise (just read the reviews), the Sightmark Photon RT or the Wraith HD. The Photon RT is a great scope but I believe the Wraith is slightly better at night and the Wraith is full color during the day. The Photon is a very solid scope though and I don't want to take anything away from it. But I can tell you that Wraiths are selling 50 to 1 over Photons right now and I'm honestly not joking about the 50 to 1.....

Thermal trumps digital NV in most every situation but you can kill a ton of animals with a good $500 optic like the Wraith or Photon.

If you have more questions, just let me know!

If you bought it from me, give me a call and we can get it sorted out. The Axions use the new APS3 batteries and I've only seen 2 bad batteries out of way over 100, so they are very reliable but anything can happen. I'll be glad to help.

As I mentioned a few times, pair that Wraith with our 66LRX IR light and identify out to 500-600 yards or pair it with our Coyote Cannon IR light and identify out to around 1000 yards. We give TBH members a 10% discount, just send me a PM for the discount code and I will send it to you.
