There are nilgai there but to hunt only with archery, shotguns and muzzleloader would be extremely difficult.

Modern inline muzzle loaders are pretty darn proficient, you can shoot them accurately at 200+ yards

There's a few herds left. Couple of weeks ago I saw a bunch of cows while walking along highway 100 in between the high school and HEB in port Isabel. It was private property but that area runs into the Bahia grande unit of Atascosa.

Usually means they give you boundaries that you are not suppose to leave. Most times it is defined roads and creeks, but have seen it as logging roads and old barb wire dilapidated fence lines. I have been on 1 hunt where my compartment was around 3k acres.

Has anyone ever been picked to hunt the Grapevine Lake permit from the COE? I put in my app on the 1st and it will be my first hunt there.

A lot of these places are broken up into "pastures". They usually give out 2 maps, one of the entire place and one of just your pasture. When they take you out to show you your compartment, they will go over the boundaries. You will be confined to hunt only that compartment. Some that I have been on can range from 100 acres to well over a 1,000. You come and go as you please. On the assigned blinds, they most of the times take you out and pick up at a blind that have already been set up. The compartment hunts, some may or may not have hunting blinds, so bring some stands and hunt where you want.

You put in for Bahia? That is going to be one tough hunt without a rifle.

No. I got back on my old lease in Jim Hogg this year. I didn't put in for any atascosa hunts. It's just a money grab for the refuge's ocelot program with 800 permits at $130 a pop.

Lol, so true. There isn't much that's close to down here. I remember the first youth hunt that I took my boys on years ago, everyone thought it was awful that we had to drive 3.5 hours to get there. We thought that was pretty funny. Told em it was a 10 hour drive to my in laws in Celina so this was nothing!

1st time applicants always score it seems, think there's some weight goes into 1st timers but nobody has confirmed. Get your gear ready you'll probably draw everything you applied for. lol

Are you only allowed to put in 1 application per draw? I've never looked into draw hunts and this will be my first time. I keep reading up on "points" and adding points etc...is that only for non-residents in other states?

You can put in one application per unit/park within each category but if you dont draw it only gets you 1 point for the entire category:

EX) You choose Gun Either sex --> You can enter 1 time into each unit within that category. If you do not draw any unit in that category you get 1 point for the category "Gun Either Sex". The you can move onto the next category and do the same thing.

Some people put in for almost every unit within every category while others pick a couple certain unit/parks in a couple categories.

You can play however you like.

I also think of you put in for every hunt in the category and you draw then all other hunts your preference points go back to zero in the system for the year. Some people donít care where they get drawn but others might focus on one place vs another. wouldnít want to get drawn for X when I really want Chaparral for a buck hunt so that might be only place I apply with 10+ preference points.

I was told this same thing by the Head Person at Mason Mountain a few years ago. He said he did away with the Either Sex hunt there and went to a Mgmt Hunt (5 pt or less) because folks were bitching about not seeing 150 inch deer and he got tired of it. Told me the biologist said they still needed to shoot some bucks so they have folks shoot the 5 pts and less now. Nobody bitching about bucks not big enough anymore. Heck on our hunt, I was getting frustrated I wasn't seeing bucks small enough but sure enjoyed seeing a bunch of good deer on that hunt.

I also asked a State Park in the Hill Country a few years ago (during a gun hunt) why they did away with their archery hunt. Basically head guy said they kept finding wounded and dead deer in the campground areas after the hunt. He was frustrated people couldn't hit a basketball at 20 yards. Said TPWD didn't want him to require a proficiency test prior to the hunt so he cancelled it.

Anyway, I'm sure each site has stories and I think some TPWD folks just get tired of it. I always try and send a follow up email to both the Park Superintendent/Manager and TPWD Public Hunt Coordinator after each hunt letting them know I was greatful for the hunt opportunity and hope they continue the program in the future. I'm sure they get plenty of emails telling them what they are doing wrong.

They still have Guadalupe SP on the Either Sex only but looks like number of permits is much lower. Only 6 total permits total for all deer hunts. Some more for Bauer Unit across the river and Honey Creek next door but numbers seem low.

Anyway over the years I've learned that where/when hunts are held are up to the specific Park/WMA Site Mgmt and the Area Biologist. TPWD Austin can only suggest and encourage. For that reason, I occasionally will send an email to State Park Superintendents who used to have Public Hunts and no longer have them asking them to reconsider. Couple recent I remember are Huntsville and Dinosaur Valley. I've also contacted a couple larger State Parks that have never had hunts to inquire "why no hunts?" I usually don't get a response but it doesn't hurt to ask nicely....

Had a good discussion in person with Staff at Lockhart State Park earlier this year. Their golf course was getting blown up by hogs and they were paying a trapper. I suggested a public hunt. It's a small park and they were worried about neighbors complaining but said they would consider it as a possible option in the future. Told them archery hunters are quiet, their neighbors wouldn't even know

The reason some don't have hunts is the people running some state parks are anti-hunting, theres actually quite a bit of it in the parks service, its sickening. And some of them aren't anti just non-hunters, the archery idea by the golf course is a good idea, lots of these people aren't in the know about hunting, take a crossbow by there and show him how proficient they can be with little practice might change some minds.

I noticed they donít have any of the statistics from last years hunts. I always liked looking at those to see what was taken and the odds of drawing. Hopefully theyíre just behind due to the COVID crap and they will get it up.

Good, Iíve been on here long enough to know you have been band from the draw system due to excessive hunting.
