No idea... but it seems like they always go to something else every few years and usb has been through 3 versions over the last 10.

The reason chargers have been staying 'more' universal is the epa stepped in about 10 years ago and said they had to stop making different chargers for every new model phone. Way too many were ending up at the landfill due to phone specific Chargers
