Got my buck for the year. By no means a giant but I am proud of him. I was hoping I could kill a Pope and Young buck with my bow but probably won't be this year.
Got off of work and hauled but home. Changed into my scentlok and ran out the door. Stopped and checked the wind and it was swirling. I drove to my number one spot and got out of the truck. A few puffs with the puffer bottle made it clear that hunting that stand would do nothing but burn it. Jumped back in my truck and drove to another place and just about showered in DeadDownWind.
Walked into the spot and nothing in sight. Climbed up into my stand took my quiver off and nocked an arrow. Not two minutes later a 13" 8 pt comes in and start milling around. Raised his nose a few times like he was going to wind me.
As he is doing this he looks over his shoulder and out of my line of sight and clamps his tail. He continued to stare into a spot I couldn't see. I look up and this wide buck comes walking out of the tree line. When I first saw him he was 175 yards away. I made the decision to shoot if he gave me a shot. He began to run in and stopped at 40 yards.
He stared the other buck down and continued into 25 yards. At this point he was getting very close to being in my wind. He seemed nervous and started sniffing the air. He was quartering to me a bit and before I new it I was at full draw with the pin anchored.
I let it fly and hit him high. He dropped and began to spin on the ground. I gave him 60 seconds and could see good blood but he was still breathing. I got down and put a second arrow in him. He was dead within five seconds.
So here he is.
