I'm hearing hearsay that rut activity has been seen. I doubt it, rut in Dryden is never this early. Any of you fellas have some input on this?

Not a chance that's happening now. It won't get kicked off good until Thanksgiving.

I usually start seeing the bigger bucks around December 8-13 time period. Last year, all of my big bucks disappeared after opening weekend and didn't reappear until the last weekend of the season. But, they were still after the does a little bit.

Kiddos picked about 40 pounds of acorns for
me today. Thinking about scattering them in the feed pen in Dryden when we head that way. Guessing those deer have never even seen an acorn, so not sure if it will help or hurt. Ur thoughts? ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Looks like we may get that hard freeze we need out there Tue, Wed, and Thurs nights of next week. Low shows 34 and its always 8-10 degrees colder that forecasted lows on our place. Praying it freezes hard to kill all the green so they hit the feeders.

I sat this weekend and did witness some mature bucks following doe's with the open mouth sniffing, nose to the ground.

I saw some bucks nosing the does and moving them around last year just before Thanksgiving. I wound up taking a really nice 8 at 302 yards with my 7/08. I was proud of that deer cuz I'd been trying to get that 7/08 to to shoot and finally broke down and had it bedded and trigger job done. It's a shooter now.
Other lease members are going out this weekend. Me and the GF are going the 17-20th. I think it will be a little early for the big boys and I'm going to hold out for any one of the three that I had hanging around last year prior to the season. They disappeared after opening weekend but showed back up the last weekend. Unfortunately, I'd already killed my mature buck and was left to whacking culls. Not this year! LOL! I'll eat tag soup if I have to. I'm not sure what the lion situation has done to the area around my stand either. |

Well, last year it was hotter than blue blazes opening weekend and I didn't see anything good either. Like I said in earlier post I'll be out there 17-20 and I hope things are moving a little better. Other guys will be at the lease this weekend and I hope to get a report from them when they get back.
The good side to all of this is they've got really good forage going into the fall and winter months and that should help produce some pretty good antlers next year as well as help with body weight. |

Me and the GF are headed out Friday evening and staying until Tuesday. Reports are not much movement this past weekend. They killed two huge hogs though and I've posted the only pic of one below. They said it weighted close to 300. This hog, or another completely like it, destroyed a stand and fill feeder. This one had cutters, the other one didn't.
Hopefully this cold front gets them moving and knocks the green off out there. I will be doing some rattling for sure. KAP! And I hope I get a crack at a lion. |

My Covert game pictures from yesterday and today shows a lot of does hanging around the feeders. Had 7 I could count in one picture. I nice 8 pt was in one picture with the does and was more interested in corn. It was 32 at 7:30 this morning. Hopefully it will get colder tonight. I will be out there the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I hunted 4-7th and didn't see any bucks and few does but upper 80's didn't help. I did manage a doe.

Went out yesterday and filled feeders. Was good sign and deer are still hitting them hard. Will go back out in 9 days to hunt for a week. Love me some Terrell County. Was nice and green, but not as much as I was thinking. Should be a good season and the deer are looking really healthy. That should make for some excellent 2019 antlers....

The GF and I got back yesterday evening. We saw a few good bucks moving around, but they were younguns and we let them pass waiting for the older bucks to start moving. I did see one older class buck, not very wide with dark chocolate horns and at least a 10. He had a doe on lockdown and was running off everything else. He got in one heck of a fight with a larger/younger 9 point and beat the fire out of him! Best buck fight I've ever seen. Lasted about a minute and a half and they were tearing it up. Over and through brush, knock downs and all. It was awesome. I saw 10 bucks at that feeder that mroning and grunted up one nice 8. I wish I could have video'd it, but they were 329 yards off. Took the GF back to that blind on Tuesday morning, but only saw one young 10 and some smaller bucks and does.
Rattled up a small 6 on Monday afternoon and it appears they were moving all day. The best part of the weekend was my GF killing hogs. I've never seen them on this lease like now. She killed 4 and I killed 4. I love shooting them when they're running and we jumped two sounders and I let the new Barrett 6.5 Swede eat. The 130 Swift Scirocco rolled them. I killed one other at a blind. The GF killed two good ones at a blind up on top and then two more smaller pigs at a feeder down low. We are hoping to go back the first weekend of December. Maybe the big boys will be moving then. This crap has GOT to go! And this is just at one blind. Geez! |

I attended church at the Pumpville Baptist Church last Sunday and one of the ladies there lives on the Devils Creek Ranch. She said her husband and some hunters had killed a yote Saturday night and shot at more on Sunday. That ranch is high fenced too.
Some of them thought we had killed javalinas until I showed them the pictures. You shoulda seen their mouths drop open. We hunt about 30 miles north of them. My GF saw a yote last year on our lease but couldn't get a shot off. Funny thing is we haven't even heard any. |

I had a GREAT Terrell County hunt this past week. A Muley (with WT looking mainbeams), a WT, and a Javelina at 375 yards with my 13” Specialty Pistol in .308 which is my new distance record.

Just got back from my annual desert hunt (Terrell Co. TX) and had the time of my life! Every year my brother and I head to our west Texas lease and spend 5 days enjoying the wilderness hunting whitetail, mule deer, and predators/javelina with our Specialty Pistols.
First morning in the stand I was sitting with “Doris” my Remington XP-100 in .45-70 Govt. A thick fog rolled in early and I could only see 40 yards ahead of me. I put my feet up, got put some breakfast from my pack, and thought to myself, “If God wants me to have a buck this morning, he’s pretty much gonna have to walk right under my stand.” Not even three minutes later I heard the sound of rocks moving under hooves and I watched a doe run from right to left under my blind. Hot on her tail was this no browtine 7 point that was on my hit-list. He stopped dead center in front of my blind just long enough to give me time to ready Doris and send a 225 grain Xtreme Hunter from Underwood Ammo straight through his front shoulder. He took a few steps and then crashed lights out. The Lehigh Defense bullet did its job and internal damage was massive. Love how both accurate and deadly these rounds are. ![]() ![]() Second morning was clear and cooler. The deer movement wasn’t as much as I had hoped for, but there were a few whitetail and muley does in view. I then saw movement from behind a bush at 225 yards and I watched as a muley buck showed himself. He walked in my direction and stopped to look around at 153 yards. This time I was shooting “Hilda” my 13” Remington 700 Specialty Pistol in .308 Win and was shooting the Lehigh Defense 175gr Controlled Chaos bullets. I put a round through the right shoulder of the muley and watched as he piled up just a few yards from where he originally stood. When I approached the buck I was in awe of the literal bloodbath he was laying in. What looked like gallons of blood had poured from both the exit wound as well as his mouth. The Controlled Chaos bullets are designed to send the base through as a kind of solid acting projectile while the nose of the bullet sends off razor sharp pedals in different directions once entry is made. This was my second kill with this bullet and it definitely will be my pick for my .308 caliber hunting bullet from now on. The damage from the separating pedals doesn’t make a bad shot good, but in the event that a bullet doesn’t go where it’s supposed to, they do provide a little better margin for error and they definitely put lights out almost instantly in my experience. At this point I’m two days in, and have two bucks in the cooler! ![]() Third day I was tagged out for deer and wanted to get a longer shot at a javelina to stretch the legs of Hilda. I went up a ridge line to glass at daylight and spotted a pack of javelinas feeding at 880 yards down in the bottom. I drove the Mule down the ridge as far as possible which put me 375 yards away from the javi’s. I crawled up on the high rack of the Mule and positioned the Specialty Pistol for the shot. Dialed in my distance and didn’t have to hold any for wind due to a light headwind. I picked the biggest of the group of 5 and positioned my crosshairs right on its front shoulder. I sent another of the 175 grain Controlled Chaos bullets down range and I watched as the javelina dropped in his tracks. He didn’t make a move after the shot and literally laid in the spot he was standing when the bullet struck. I made my way down to to pick up my trophy and new distance record of 375 yards from a Specialty Pistol. Got the pics taken and the javi on ice. ![]() ![]() My hunt was complete other than all the work of processing the game which we do all ourselves. The deer will be made into jerky and sausage and the javelina into tamales. God is GOOD and another hunt is in the books with the Specialty Pistols.... I couldn’t ask for anything more. ![]() One of the pedals recovered from the Controlled Chaos bullet. ![]() Some camp pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() Deer jerky in the making: ![]() Javelina deboned for tamales: ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I’d be interested to know where the hogs are as well. We’re 16 miles north of Dryden on the east side of 349 and we don’t have any.

I was invited to hunt a place between Dryden and Sanderson that sits approximately 20 miles north of 90. We did not shoot anything but saw lots of deer including some very good deer. One of the lease members has shot very nice muleys every year out there.
There are some deep canyons with decent size oak trees in them where the hills dominate the terrain. Love that type of country, specially when good rains have nourished the vegetation. Good luck to you folks hunting Terrel county. |

Oh it’s been wet for sure. Rained all day yesterday and last night. Caught a. break on the way to the blind this morning but it picked back up and stayed constant until around 9am. Ended muley season with no luck. Didn’t see a single one today. Dang things are elusive and don’t follow habitual routines like WT. I did watch and older fat WT all weekend, going to save him for my wife’s first buck. He’s no where near a wall hanger, but he should dress out at 150+, sucker is fat. Now, the five hour drive home and up for work at 0530. Hope y’all had better luck.

Side note. This is my first year feeding out here. (Years past was always spot and stalk. Had had success with that in the past 8pt muley, 10 pt. WT, and 2 old fat WT doe. ) What do y’all feed, how often do you feed, are the results worth it? I’m on the hwy, total property is 600 acres, I have one blind and feeder on a 250 acre pasture west of prairie creek. I mixed 50/50 corn and L&E blast feed this year. Growing up hunting in South Texas I fed corn year round. That was mainly just to keep them from going next door.
