Just making a new Terrell County 2018-2019 thread for all of us that prep, feed, and hunt out there.
We will be hauling our first load of protein out the last Sunday of February. Changes/Additions for me this year will be: 1.) Adding a set of CoonHoods to my protein feeder. 2.) Moving my broadcast feeder outside and away from my feeder pen in an attempt to coax in some pen-wary mature bucks that I have seen and allow for the whitetail and muleys to feed apart from each other. 3.) I'm also going to quit mixing corn with my protein and feed only L&E from the protein feeder all year. 4.) Going to add another game camera. I have three bucks (if they made it) (one WT and 3 muleys) that should be absolute studs this fall. I think I love watching them grow on camera almost more than I love gettin' a shot on them while hunting! Here's to the Terrell County 2018-2019 season.....DILLEY-DILLEY |

![]() Bad mojo to post pics of my main target bucks. Seems to work for others just fine, but EVERY time I do it, it ends unsuccessful. Hopefully (God willing) I will be able to post trophy pics come December. Just the way I do it..... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I'm glad you started this thread. I'm kinda on the fence about an issue-whether to put up a protein feeder in addition to my corn feeder or not. I was going to buy a timed unit because it's a 5 hour drive one way to fill feeders. Additionally, I'll be the only one on 4k acres using protein, and the overall cost is a concern. Additionally, there's a bunch of mouflon/barbado/black Hawaiian friggin' sheep that I don't want to feed. We probably killed 30+ of them this past season, but one of the neighboring hunters said he had 30 more hanging out in his canyon. I said "choot 'em" and he didn't want to shoot during deer season.
![]() Anyway, I'm considering protein feeding, maybe another camera on a different feeder (I'm the only one running cameras), killing more sheep and pigs, and working on building a bow set up for my feeder. I'll be headed out the last weekend of February as well to fill feeders. |

He looks like he's a 3 year old. If you can hold off for another 2 years, he'll be a brute. MD don't really get good until they're about 5. Nice deer. Probably 22' wide with some good forks.

mule deer really need age....great thing is they can get hooked on the protein and if you put the feed to them they can really pop. That is a good buck |

Unfortunately I don't have any MD on our lease. I see them driving in on occasion, but never on the lease property. I used to hunt them north of Van Horn for 25+ years and I sure do miss it.

I'm going to try and go out west the weekend of the 20th. I'd like to take the rest of my corn allotment out and in the feeders before the temperature is 115 degrees! However, my GF's niece is having her quinceanera in Abilene the same weekend. I left it up to her to make the decision on where to go. The good thing is she hates it when I go to the lease without her.
![]() Plus, I got a new rifle I wanna air out on some sheep and pigs. |

Been all over Terrell County the last 6 days! Drive about 350 miles a day! Saw lots of deer north on 2400 and 2886. A couple of nice bull elk every night on 2400. On 384 north of Dryden saw tons of deer from about 5 miles north all the way to the county line. It is very dry and the deer are coming to the road ditches.
Couple questions for you guys that hunt out there? 1. How much land do you need to keep deer from getting slaughtered by your neighbors. (Appears to be a stand every 300-400 yards in some areas? 2. For you guys in paint mare? Do you see any bucks over 1.5yrs old? There must be a stand to every 50 acres. Last if a guy is looking to buy a place on the area to see some decent Mule deer bucks, what is the best area. |

I was out there this past weekend as well. Filled feeders and went looking for some sheep and pigs that need eliminating. The country is dry as a bone. I saw that it was listed in the Exceptional Drought category on the morning weather report. Watched several does eating cactus so at least they are getting some fluids.

We were going to head West tomorrow after work, but due to the forecast, we are going to wait a week. Looks like Terrell Co may get wet over the next few days. No need to take any chances....

I wouldn't take the chance either. Besides, it hails out there pretty regularly. The country could use the rain though for sure. It's very dry. especially for this time of year. The spring/summer rains for the last two years didn't happen this year. |

We hunt western Val Verde/eastern Terrell County. I watched the radar like a hawk last week and I think our lease got some rain, just not sure how much. Speaking of "on the move" we had 4 show up at our camp last November, all wearing the same back packs with maps, etc. they were walking in the creek bottom and got spotted by one of our younger hunters. After a short "Mexican standoff" they finally walked away, but they had to be convinced at gun point to leave. The Terrell County SO and Border Patrol came out, but it takes them 2.5 hours to get to us so those "mules" were long gone. I was out there three weeks ago and had one on game camera fro back in March. Walking up to the feeder carrying a blue sleeping bag he walked right past the camera and never knew I got his picture. |

Was a good day for us. Temp was good, but as usual was windy. Got all feeders filled and found a few sheds. A lot of the cactus we’re beginning to bloom with the rains the week before, but you could tell how dry it has been. Looks like they may get some more rain tonight. Let’s hope. Would be nice for a good shower once a week throughout the summer.

I was out there one day last June to fill feeders and when I got to the ranch the thermometer said 113 at 2 PM. One of the other lease members saw it read 116. We could only get the camp house to "cool down" to 89, but considering the high it felt pretty darn good. I'm glad I got my turn feeding done in April. I'd like to go at least one time in June before I have my hip replacement surgery on the 26th. I got a new trigger and scope on my AR and a new 6.5 x 55 I'm itching to air out on some sheep and pigs. But, those temperatures will make me stay home for sure. |

We are considering doing our July feeder-fill at night. Get there around 2-3am and fill during the dark and back on the road mid-morning. Last July fill it was 108 and couldn't touch anything metal without gloves. Was miserable. |

Good idea. We've done similar before, but it wasn't only feeders we needed to fill. We had to work on the windmill as well so that had to be done in daylight. Left here at 0300 and hit the lease by 0730. done filling feeders by noon and then on to the windmill.

Heading out Wednesday about dark. That way we can do most of the work in the dark and early morning hours. Only a month later than originally planned, but such is life. Anxious to get back out there and see how things look.

They have some rain out there. Lots of my deer pics showed the rain, wet weather. Looks like the deer were loving it. Had these at the feeder yesterday morning.

I'm anxious to get out there myself. My hip replacement has held me back for two months but planning on making a run Sept 14-16. I haven't checked cameras since April so I'm pretty sure the cards will be full.

Got to the lease at 3am this morning and began filling feeders by headlamp and ATV headlights. First time we’ve done that, but 75-80 degrees was much better than triple digits. Got done and was out the gate headed back before 9am. I haven’t seen it that green and lush before. Grass everywhere and things blooming. Should be a great season. Excited to get there and and hunt this December.

Good to hear that it has greened up out there finally. I was there back in April and the vegetation looked like August. I hope to get out there in a couple weeks. I'm pretty sure my cameras SD cards are full.
