Cool! Thanks for the heads up. My kids went through school at Abilene Christian. Morgan cheered and Zach played 6-man. We played Strawn and most of the other small 6-man public schools in the area in our pre-district (TAAPS private schools) season. I always loved playing the small town schools, especially at their fields. Friendly people, GREAT hamburgers at the concession stands, small town atmosphere.... Just more enjoyable than going to the metromess to play other private schools in the big city.

Thanks for posting this Jerp. 6 man is electric to watch and anything can happen. Strawn has played well for a long time. Richland Springs (where we hunt) has had a pretty good run also. Good stuff!

My son's senior year, we played Strawn at Strawn. I used to take photos of all the games in all the sports. This was the one and only game I ever got kicked out of.

6man football doesn't typically get the most experienced referee crews. Usually there will be 1 or maybe 2 guys with good experience, and then the rest are young/new refs. That night was the 3rd game of the season, and there was a young guy on the crew that was having a really rough night. Missing call after call on both sides of the ball, getting an ear full from the coaches and fans on both sidelines.... Just a bad night for the poor fella.

I tried to keep my mouth shut as much as possible while taking photos. That was one of the main reasons I liked to take photos. It kept me in check better than sitting in the stands would have.

Anyhow, toward the end of the 3rd quarter, Strawn had just scored to go up 43-38. There was another missed call by the young ref on either the TD or the extra point, and our head coach went onto the field and lit into the young ref. One of Zach's buddies took the kickoff and ran it up the near ACHS sideline. This was the last photo I took that game. The Strawn player forced Hayden out of bounds, and once they were about 3 yards out and Hayden let up, the Strawn kid picked Hayden up and body slammed him right in front of the bench.

The young ref was right there on the sideline watching it. No flag. The coaches and fans BLEW UP. One of the other coaches was standing next to me, and he yelled at the young ref something about how he was the worst ref he'd ever seen in his life in some fairly colorful language. About that time I hollered, "You gotta call that!". The ref heard what the coach yelled at him, looked up and saw me with my mouth open and threw his flag in the air. He ran out to the head ref and started pointing at me. I knew I was getting tossed. Sure enough. They ejected me. I quietly packed up my camera and went up into the stands. About that time, the game was still not being resumed. The Strawn principal walked over to our stands and motioned me down. He sheepishly said, "I'm really sorry, but the ref said he's not starting the game back up until you are out of the stadium. I need to escort you to the parking lot."

I said, "Well, OK. Let's go." And we walked to the parking lot. He was apologetic. Really nice guy. As he left, I put all my camera gear in my truck. I had a blue sweatshirt on with a black shirt underneath. I took the sweatshirt off and walked back to the stands with my black shirt on and watched the 4th quarter with my wife.

A buddy of mine was one of the head refs for the Abilene area guys. I saw him the next week. He laughed and said, "I heard about your deal at Strawn." I asked, "Did you see the film?". He said, "Yeah. It was a teaching moment for the kid."

I'm sure he'd gone on to become an excellent ref since then. Everybody has a rough day. That was just his.

Hayden (the ball carrier) is now a Marine.
