Looking at them on paper and having substantive talks with agents are really, really different things.

Riley just nuked their 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes and probably takes their QB with them to USC. They are scrambling to get a guy in place ASAP so that they can try to salvage what is left of their team and short term recruiting.

Let's put it this way. If Riley had left a month ago and they had some time to make a legitimate search, would Brent Venables be the guy? He might prove to be an excellent HC, but he is the definition of a comfort hire.

Football scoop says there is smoke with LSU and Brian Kelly.

I do not see this as a fit at all.

The other names LSU has vetted are Matt Rhule, Mark Stoops, Matt Campbell, and Lane Kiffin.

Kelly is a good coach but like you said I don’t see him as a fit at Lsu. LSU could do much worse but I’m not crazy about hiring a coach his age.
