It can go both ways - some of y’all put on great shots with unfortunate results, I let a bad shot fly this morning and somehow recovered the deer in 50 yards.
Summary: Stag, quartering away, aimed for back of rib cage. Right as I released, a doe lunged at him and he darted forward. I didn’t know that at the time - just heard the arrow hit, saw him run off clearly hurting. Went to get my son’s buddy so the boys could track it.
Started the track, tons of blood. Feeling great, certain it’s a dead deer. A blind man could follow the trail. Like 5 spots like this:
My 9-yr-old calls out, “Got him!” and I’m thinking what a great job I did on this one.
Boys with the deer. Now, the rest of the story...
Entrance in back ham. Exit opposite rib cage. Arrow passed through all guts possible. Bled out quickly, but horrible shot with good luck.
Anyhow, buck had zero signs of testicles and still in velvet. Bigger body than any of the 20 does I had at my feeder. We have a lot of these in Llano County. Should eat well.
I’ll take it.
