Red has a little more orange color! Gray fox are definitely the most common around here. I have seen one red fox in my life near San Angelo TX. I am 53. Have seen numerous gray fox all over Texas! I believe I read the Gray can climb trees also.

When I coached in Hillsboro about 25 years ago, there was a pair of reds that raised a family each year in a culvert behind the field house. Those are the only reds I have ever seen in the wild. My brother had 3 greys coming to a feeder last year in Crawford. We watched them for about 45 minutes one night from his shop

I've seen only one red fox here in tx, and it was just a couple months ago. Brilliant red, black, and white markings. Bud Adams, owner of the Oilers, lived just to the west of here/Field Store. In the 60's he brought them in and released them for fox hunts on horseback.
