Have you ever let one walk because you didn't want to deal with a blood trail?

I let what would have been one of my best bucks ever last weekend because it was hot as hell and I did not want to mess with him.
But a blood trail had nothing to do with it.

I'm assuming you're talking about a blood trail in the rain when you know it'll wash away. That's the only thing I can think of that would make me hold off.

Even then, it'd have to be pouring. And if it was pouring I'd likely not be in the blind.

I let a spike walk one year on the last day of season because I walked about 1/2 mi into a flooded bottom, about 1/3 of which was mid thigh deep

Would have worked to get a nice buck out but didn't want to put that much effort into anything less

Once only because it was hot and raining. Could not have driven near him in the mud.
Still regret it.

Not because of a blood trail, but many times because it was too hot or I didn’t want to mess with cleaning it.

you mean that it wasn't worth shooting? I am in an antler restricted county and I have let a lot of them walk...let 'em grow; but as far as the temps of the day; if I think it is just too hot, then why waste the time going hunting? unless you just like sitting in the stand and looking at what shows up.... I've done it a lot of times with no intention of killing anything; just wanna see what is out there. I have cameras but there is nothing like looking at them with the naked eye!!

If Iím gonna go thru the trouble of showering and going to the stand, Iím not gonna be concerned about cleaning an animal. Iím gonna kill it and clean it. Not gonna pass a target animal if Iíve gone to the trouble of going hunting.

If it’s raining hard enough to wash away a blood trail then you should easily be able to trail a shot animal from its tracks left in the mud. We did so this week on a doe and it was easier than blood trailing believe it or not. And she was actually shot with a slick trick. Deer still have to eat.

Nope. The blood trail is half the fun for me when bow hunting. Even if I see them fall, I still ďblood trailĒ them before I walk up to them. I think it makes me a better tracker.

I think we are on the same page here...i'm just saying that sometimes I really don't expect success.. but I only have to walk about 250 yds to my stand. I don't have to drive 250 miles. I really respect the guys that have that gitupango that do this every weekend.

Is this thread serious? Why in the world would you take a shot on an animal and not track it? Isn’t that illegal also? I would lose a lot of respect for a man if he is too lazy to track a wounded or killed animal. ...smh

Why would you put effort into going huntin and not plan on killing anything?lol.....That's kinda what I'm thinkin. Seems like a lot of effort to go sit in a stupid tree and watch animals eat corn.

It’s about not taking the shot even it it a legal deer cause it’s not a good day for taking care of the meat. For me I do that 95% of the time. I enjoy hunting. And watching deer/nature is what I like to do.

Too dark, too hot, solo and have to drag and quarter alone, then eat late do the tick check clean the tools and then go to bed without a proper shower, bourbon and cigar. If any combination of two or more exist I can be perfectly content with a nice sit in the woods followed by the other activities I would have missed. Deer will be back tomorrow, freezers full and Food Land has T-bones for 2.99/LB

I agree. My reply wasn't based on a blood trail, just sometimes don't feel like the long drag out of the woods or n the mood for a good meal at camp...... so I walk out early

I go and sit in the stand all the time, with no intent to shoot anything. I just enjoy being in the woods. I have one buck so far on camera that is a shooter and my oldest daughter wants to try hunting this year and when she seen the picture from the camera she said that is one she wanted. (because it is a daddy deer LOL, she is 7). so I have only been sitting in the stand when I can, to just see which one would be better for youth season.

I have made the decision to not hunt in the evening because I did not want to go tracking through the pine thicket in the dark when it is in the 80ís, but if I am going out to hunt, I am going all in on the kill and everything that includes.

If I don't feel like tracking I don't go hunting. I'll Just relax on the porch and kill a few 16oz's instead. The fun stops and the work begins when the shot is taken.

Never a target or a "trophy caliber" deer....but I let does walk every hunt because I don't want to stink up my target buck hunting areas or mess with cleaning a doe on some hunts. Saturday nights are usually our big lease cook/campfire nights and I won't kill a doe or crappy cull and interfere with that. I can kill them other times.

Never have I passed a deer because I didn't want to trail it. I have passed on convenient doe and cull buck shots if it is raining so the rain didn't ruin the trail.
