The Old Man and the Sea

It was right at 60 years ago that I first read Hemingway's novel, 'The Old Man and the Sea'.
My Grandfather gave me a copy and I polished it off the thing in one day. Then I read it again followed by reading it every few years.
I decided to give my three Grandsons a copy each and listen to their thoughts.
A story of incredible determination, success, an odd failure, and salvation.
    He went too far.

I need to read this book. The movie w/ Spencer Tracy is pure greatness.

....and, Per Ferris Beuller - you can never go to far.

Great book. Hemingway was a complicated tortured genius. Check out the Ken Burns documentary on him currently running on PBS

When I started college my English professor gave the class an assignment to read a novel and write a report on it.

He was an old Navy and Marine vet and I had just gotten out of the Navy. I had no idea who to read or anything.

I went to him for advice, he asked me a couple of questions:

                "Do you like to drink?"
                Yep!

"Do you like to chase women?"
                Yep!

Read Hemmingway was his answer. He's still my favorite author and have read many of his novels and short stories.

Have read Old Man and the Sea many times, great book.

                    Yes he was.
Paul Harvey is where I heard the rest of that sordid story.

I am fortunate to share a birthday with him. I have visited his grave in Idaho, he was a very complicated man. I have read most of his books and strangely I understand them. But I also understand all the Swamp People so that probably doesn't mean much.
