I'm not ready just yet to get another dog as it's only been a week since we had to put our Aussie mix pound rescue down after 14 years with her.
I want to put some thought into our choice this time, so... With so many options, sell me on why you prefer your chosen breed. FYI I'd like a dog that will travel well isn't aggressive isn't gun shy Prefer a medium or slightly bigger sized dog Not planning to train it for a particular job but it would a bonus if it could fetch up downed dove. I'm sure I'll think of some other requirements as this goes on. |

There’s going to be a whole lot of not wrong answers because several breeds fit that part above but to me, that almost screams Lab.

Great Pyrenees is the best dog breed, but for what you described, I’d look at a Vizsla.

Give me a mutt. Preferably without any Chihuahua or Pit Bull Terrier blood. A Golden/Lab cross makes an excellent family dog. Will hunt, retrieve, shake water all over you, and generally steal your heart.

Most of the dogs listed above need a lot of exercise to keep them from getting bored. When they get bored they get into stuff and tear it up. I'd look into a non working breed, unless you have time to work them. I'll probably get beaten up for this, but I've always been partial to pit or pit cross dogs, but only if I get them as young as possible. They have a bad reputation, but you usually only hear the bad stuff. Not sure how many we've had, but only one of them had a trigger, and I got her at several months old. Take your time on your decision and it's nice to see people do their homework before rushing into something they don't want, or can't handle.

Lab, either black or yellow.
Maybe a GSP as they can be pretty versatile Jack Russel if you have to have a smaller dog Either way, my advice is to research the bloodline and wait for the right litter Or see what you can find to adopt. |

I guess I’ll be the first to say JRT, but that’s just the best for me. I don’t know what’s best for you. We bought this little feller for my son when he was just a kid. When he moved out Sarge stayed with us. He tracks and he finds. He has tackled unhurt boar hogs that could kill him, if they could catch him ! He loves everybody but he’s definitely my dog. Yep, he just has one eye now…..long story.

Maybe this will help you decide.
How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb? Depends on the dog's point of view.... GOLDEN RETRIEVER: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb? BORDER COLLIE: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code. DACHSHUND: You know I can't reach that stupid bulb! ROTTWEILER: Make me. LAB: Oh, me, me!!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? MALAMUTE: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he's busy. JACK RUSSELL TERRIER: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture. POODLE: I'll blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry. COCKER SPANIEL: Why change it? I can pee on the carpet in the dark. DOBERMAN PINSCHER: While it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the sofa. BOXER: Who cares? I can play with my squeaky toys in the dark. MASTIFF: Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark. CHIHUAHUA: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. IRISH WOLFHOUND: Can somebody else do it? I've got this hangover and.......... POINTER: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there! GREYHOUND: It isn't moving. Who cares? AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle.... OLD ENGLISH SHEEP DOG: Light bulb? That thing I just ate was a light bulb? HOUND DOG: ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ |

First choice based on your list would be Lab, with Boykin Spaniel and Vizla bringing a close tie at 2nd.

Here is my little hiking buddy. We are up to 60-80 minutes a day.
I take him around town to meet anyone he runs into. The girls a Dutch brothers give him kisses and post him on SM every morning. He is becoming very well behaved for a young pup. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I’ve owned a lot of different dogs through the years, mostly being German breeds. Don’t think I’ll look any further than a German wirehair from here on out. Very regal personality that waits for direction. She water retrieved, land retrieved, tracked wounded deer with patience naturally with a want to do it well in the first year. Nothing can hide from her nose. She’s not aggressive, but confident in her ability, and great family dog at the end of the day. She spends 6-8 hours a day in her kennel in the house while we are at work, never wastes a bark, and frequently makes 5+ hour road trips with us. She can load up into a truck tailgate 5’ off the ground without assistance, and can run 28mph for a mile without slowing across the river bottom hayfield. Firecrackers, thunder and gunshots have never bothered her. Didn’t have the coin or time to spend on training a drahthaar, and haven’t second guessed my decision once with our less expensive German Wirehair named “Mavis” Last edited by MASTERS; 08-15-2022 at 09:05 PM. |

We have a ridgeback. He is fearless, a great defender and only barks if there’s something you need to see. He’s slightly neurotic though, but I think if he was kept inside he’d be solid. He wants to be with us 24/7. I’m just not in position for an inside pet. Guarantee you we don’t worry about him not defending our home

Also forgot he’s a decent tracker as well, with minimal training and when someone pulls up on our place, he takes off so hard he looks like he’ll run through a wall, I don’t know how he doesn’t flatten himself against our gate
