Default Letís be honest. Why do you really hunt.

Iím curious to hear yíallís responses. Iím sure there will be several common denominators in the replyís. In fact Iím sure of it. Let me say first that hunting and fishing was part of my life since I was old enough to remember. My dad never left the house to go fishing or hunting without his two sons. And for that Iím eternally grateful. It was really a way of life for us back in that era as we kept our freezers full of wild game and fish and thatís what we lived on most of the time. I love being in the outdoors and witnessing all of Gods creations and thatís when I feel closest to God knowing that he has allowed me to live the way I have wanted to live and witness nature in all of its glory to him. I love the challenge and dedication that goes into maintaining a good piece of property and managing it to reach its full potential. The adrenaline when you first see your target buck for the first time other than on camera and hoping that he will present you with the right opertunity. I love shooting pigs year round and keeping my freezer stocked with pork and making sausage just so I can give it all away to my staff. I have experienced so many hunting camp memories with close friends and family and can draw on those memories now of those that have passed away. Great memories. Fun memories. For me it is a tradition and lifestyle that I have sometimes taken for granted not realizing that everyone is not as fortunate as us to be able to experience these traditions due to economic hardships or physical hardships or for many other reasons beyond those. But for me, my number one reason and I truly mean it when I say it, is to just escape the world even if itís just for a few hours. Iím fortunate enough to have a lease 15 minutes from home and work and when things get a little heavy I can just take a little ride around the place and come back to work and be a new person. Total escape just for a few minutes. I normally employ around 20 people and in todayís world you are more like a baby sitter than an employer. So much drama with the workers today. It makes my head want to explode. And if youíre having a bad hair day you call in sick. Well Iím sorry for getting sidetracked. But for me just the peace and solitude of the woods and water is why I get up and leave a perfectly warm bed to brave the elements. Why do you?

Because I can’t NOT HUNT ! I love the chase and I love the meat. The kill is just something I have to do to get the meat so I don’t complicate it. No 700 yard shots for me, don’t need any bragging rights. Headgear is less important than it ever was. At 74 years old, I can sit all day with a little break around noon if conditions are right.

Might as well ask me why I keep my arms. I have friends who hunt because it's something to do, or a camp to get drunk at. Like a lot of us, it's a heritage. We don't need the meat. But I can't see a life without it. If there is a heaven, and I believe that's true, I can't imagine an existence without it. I'm not sure there's hunting there and I don't know where that'll leave me. I really don't want a mansion or streets paved in gold. A cabin on the edge of heaven, a good dog, and plenty of room to roam.

It started with "I have to get the big one". Then it changed to " I'm teaching my son to enjoy hunting". Now it's just enjoying time outdoors. Son is the hunter now. I pass on most animals but but enjoy seeing the world wake up & being out there. I definitively spend too much money just for the pleasure. I like the camp, the cooking, the folks there, the excitement of someone getting a good deer. Money well spent. I'm 61 now.

Yes for food. Yes to teach my daughter. Yes for the memories.

But in all honesty it is my escape from the day to day BS that wears you down. It is my time to really connect with the Man upstairs in the way that I want to as well as appreciate his creation. Itís my time to reflect on things going on in my life and ponder life decisions. Hunting and fishing are the only places I can truly do that.

I enjoy the hunt and the get away. I typically hunt 20-40 days a season and it doesn't matter to me if I have tag soup at the end of the season. It more fun when others are hunting. When we're hunting and I hear a shot and/or someone tells me they've shot something, my hunt is over and I go help track and clean the kill.

Hunting is secondary for me....
comradery, campfire, telling stories, peacefulness, silence in stand...

I dont do social media the entire time I am there....its nice for me

If I dont see a thing it was still a successful hunt for me

To be honest it’s comradery of friends and family or wanting to Riley to get one. About the only time I hunt now is when Bucks are responding to rattling. Haven’t sat in a stand but maybe 3 times in so many yrs. I prefer beef over venison anyways

There were a few years were I was just hunting some small acreage close to home that I sort of lost the fire for it. Then came the year I was able to get on the lease that I cut my teeth hunting on and since then it’s back to being a way a life.

Being outdoors, the scenery, watching the various animals. All of that.
Back at camp it’s the stories, the camp fire, the camaraderie. Cooking and spending time with friends/family.

Makes me forget about the day to day hustle and bustle and especially work.

Nothing beats sitting in the stand as dawn breaks, hearing the world wake up around you, listening to creation start to move about

Second is sitting as day fades, watching the sun go down, feeling the air getting cooler, hearing the insects fire up, and listening as the frogs and coyotes start to sing their songs

Third would be fresh meat for the table. Nothing tops backstrap, rice and gravy, and biscuits for me...closely followed by smoked sausage made from fresh venison and pork

And doing it all with family is the peak of perfection...it resets my mind and brings a fresh awareness of the awesomeness of God

They are actually one in the same. It is not Hunter or a gather, it is the hunter/gatherer culture. It is the ability to hunt and find food on your own.

People that only and can only eat after going to the meat and/or vegetable section at H-E-B, are not hunter/gatherers.

End of the history lesson, back to the thread.

Exactly the same here. The meat is most important. Messed up my arm so I just gun hunt now, and nothing over 150 yards.

While it’s not quite as important as breathing is to me it’s the next closest thing. It’s a part of me, just something I have to do.

Maybe it’s some kind of primal urge but I feel a need to kill what I eat, grow my food. Preserve my food for the winter. I like being self sufficient.

Nowadays, it's mainly to just sit and daydream; about past hunts with passed hunting partners and romanticize about huge bucks with fire coming from their nostrils in chase of a doe.

If I had to break it down to one thing, it’s because I have not yet found anything that gives me the same rush that I get immediately before I pull the trigger or let an arrow fly at a big game animal. Nothing.

Everything else that comes along with hunting; the solitude, nature, food, camaraderie, etc are all important and I enjoy all those aspects, but in the end I hunt game because I get an extreme rush out of it.

For me it is the primal feeling of being the predator hunting something. I do love the campfires, beer and laughter but nothing compares to the “hunt” for me. I could do it 365 days a year if I didn’t have to be responsible and adult the rest of the time.

Because my dad took me every chance he could, from the time I was 5. We always had a great time at the lease. We didnít see eye to eye for the longest time as I was growing up, but we always clicked when we were hunting together. I thank him for our time spent in the South Texas brush country

Actually, when I was on a lease, I looked forward to the preparation, as others have said; getting my stand(s) and feeders ready for opening day, working at the lease in 110* heat , the camaraderie with my hunting buddies, the campfires, the steaks, the jokes, the sunrises, watching the wild game, the pranksÖthe whole enchilada.

I hunt for the adrenaline rush. When any deer comes out it feels like someone punches me in the chest as hard as they can then my heart starts pumping 200 beats per second. Biggest rush I have ever had and I tried cocaine in my youth.
