Default Low oxygen, brain damage

I detailed my SIL's plight regarding her having a baby and having covid in another thread. Long story short, the docs had to do a C section to save the baby when mom wasn't looking good because her oxygen level was down to upper 80s and less. Since the result of continued lack of oxygen is death and a prolonged lack of oxygen(like near drowning) results in brain damage, what are the chances my niece has some brain damage due to low oxygen levels for several days? Thank you.

SH

I’ll be praying for y’all and I’m in no shape or form an expert, but I believe the oxygen levels have to be well below that for any substantial brain damage that’s permanent.

The baby did not have covid so this wouldn't apply to the baby. But, Thank you.

Pretty sure the low oxygen has be over a longer period of time to cause significant problems.

Pray mom and baby continue to do well

A friend of ours in her early 40's was having emergency appendix surgery a few weeks ago and died on the table. She was out 15 minutes until they got her breathing again. They put her in a coma for several days and gradually woke her up. She suffered no brain damage. I know a lot of prayers was the difference.

Prayers sent up brother.

When the time is right, she needs to see a Neurologist who can administer testing to diagnose brain damage or other neurological conditions.

First of all, prayers for Mom and Baby.

I think everyone should be just fine based on the details you've given. While the sats you describe aren't good, I don't think there will be any long term effects. Hopefully Mom is improving, or will be soon, and Baby is thriving.

I second in asking the Doctors who actually worked with both of them. Despite having well informed people on this site none of them have first hand knowledge of what exactly happened. Go ask the people who specialize in this and actually worked with the baby.

She shouldnt have any lasting effects. We regularly saw pts w COPD in the 80's on the ambulance. While a sign of respiratory (or other system) deterioration, its not anything to worry about as long as it comes back up.

Sats would be much lower before I started worrying about brain damage.

They have doctors already, I don't need to get involved. What is done, is done and can't be undone. I was just asking for opinions. Thank you.

I hope and pray it is not permanent or long lasting. Brains are amazing and can heal and essentially rewire around bad spots. It takes time so be patient.
