Heading to SA today for a couple of days with the wife (Staying at La Mansion on the RW). Have a hankering for really good Mex food…hit me with the greenscreen favorites! Thanks!

Casa Rio on the Riverwalk is very good plus has a great atmosphere. Stick to the two main combo plates, don't get fancy.

Also downtown Blanco Cafe.

Paloma Blanca-somewhat upsacale
Pollos Asados Los Nortenos-family style kind of like a bbq restauarant with big sides and stuff to share. More authenting Mexican and not tex-mex

Theses are both top of my list....Mi Tierra is more about the ambiance and location and while the food is really good I don't think it's a top 5 in SA.

Locals will say most places downtown are not good and for tourists. Especially Mi Tierra.

Of the places in downtown, Rosarios is my recommendation.

If you are willing to drive out of downtown I have other recommendations.

The Italian food place a couple buildings up from Rosarios is good too. I think it is called La Focaccia.

If you’re willing to venture out, the wife and I really like Camilla’s off Henderson Pass. I’m really not a fan of the food downtown.

La Fonda on main. A long walk or short uber ride from the RW.

Not sure what this is called but Heath turned me on to this dish last year year. You won't regret it.

Nichas on Roosevelt not too far from downtown. Petes Tako house on Brooklyn is in the downtown area and is good for breakfast and lunch, never had dinner there.

Listen to Slick8, that plate is awesome. Paloma Blanca, Rosario's are both good. Sabor, on Mc Cullough I believe, is not widely known but has some great food. Chile Aquiles and some other things that aren't texmex.

I’ve lived in the greater San Antonio area my entire life. I’ve never had good Mexican food downtown. My goto place recently closed when the owner retired. Good luck in your search.

Cheap, really good.

Taco Tex (281 and San Pedro)

We also like Alamo Cafe. Best tortillas in town.

Stay away from downtown, tourists trap and food isn’t that good. You’re paying for the ambience. Most restaurants in SA will serve good Mexican food. I’m on far west side I head to a place called Sazon it’s down Potranco road, great food. We have enjoyed Rosarios, for tacos Taquitos West Avenue seems to be a great place according to many of my friends. Enjoy your time in SA.

Mi terra and such is for tourists
Get to south town (Fruteria)or fogota , la Paloma,, and others a way from tourists zone listed above

So why would the food suck just because of the area of town it's in? I get the touristy generic spots on the Riverwalk(20 of them) and Mi Tierra. Casa Rio has been there since 1946. It's good. The Original Blanco Cafe is legit too. Isn't La Fonda on Main and Rosario's basically downtown too?

I agree. Good food is where you find it. Location might affect the ambience, but not the food.

Anywhere downtown ain’t much count. The food ain’t worth dealing with all the riff raff and yahoos.

Best tortillas in town hands down, cannot be argued is Alamo Cafe. Period. Favorite among locals, great queso as well!

Someone said jacala’s, that’s a favorite among locals.

I can’t believe I’m this far and haven’t read El Chaparal in Helotes yet. People from SA rant and rave about it, it’s good but I guess when you grow up there it’s not all that special. My favorite Mexican places are the little bitty hole in the walls.

I say tourists food because it’s geared towards bland and generic ,for Yankees and Bolillo‘s

Longhorn Cafe is my favorite burger joint.

Chris Madrid is well known, but I don’t think it’s all that great. More about the experience.
