"Magic" Duck Tank At Lease - TexasBowhunter.com Community Discussion Forums

We have a small, less than 1/4 acre tank at our lease that is covered in the green pond scum weeds. Fargus, his son Wyatt and I went to the lease to try and see if we could scratch out a couple ducks. Made a quick sit Monday evening and managed to kill 2 wood duck drakes each. Went out this morning and it was like a switch flipped. We had ducks landing on the pond before legal shooting light, spooking off and almost instantly new ducks took their place. Once it was legal, we had a limit each of wood ducks in around 10 minutes. We just sat in the bushes and watched small flock after flock come in, eat a little and leave. Had 2 wigeon drakes come in and Chris got himself a double. It was an awesome time. Had to enlist Wyatt and his kayak to be our retriever.

All in all, it was a great, quick trip. Chris and I both checked off a bucket list item, getting a wood duck for the wall.

If you'll take a coffee can, and broadcast, "Corn Gluten Meal" (50lb bag)
around the edges, as far out, as you can throw..............
That green pond scum will be gone in a couple weeks..........

I’d imagine that would also put an end to the ducks. .

That looks like duck weed to me. Probably the only reason they’re coming in there.

That is cool. I really like wood ducks, growing up I never ever seen them around here. Now we have quite a few every summer that try and raise young. I like just watching them, never had the opportunity to hunt them and I don’t care to eat ducks so I really don’t have the desire to try and find a place to hunt them. But they are pretty and very cool little ducks. I hope there numbers continue to increase here. Looks like you guys had a great time, very cool.
