Anyone have experience with this? My father in law’s got it. Broke his wrist in 30 pieces and caught it during surgery. May lose his arm. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. He is tough as nails and gotten little help from professionals.

My FIL has had it numerous times. Long story....all kinds of health problems.... Heavy duty IV antibiotics have gotten him through it every time so far.

Long recovery depending on immune status. He will probably need IV antibiotics for some time. Best recommendation is to ask for infectious disease consult. That doctor will be his best opinion on prognosis, recovery and reoccurrence.

My wifes step dad shattered his ankle and after surgery he got it and they thought he was gonna lose his foot. They put a picc line in with strong antibiotics and he finally recovered.

Man I hate to hear this. Both or my brothers had bone shattering injuries within a week of each other several years ago. One elbow, one ankle. Both got MRSA during surgery. They had 13 surgeries between the two of them over a year or so, but both kept their limbs. About half of the surgeries were to deal with the infection. They were both told they could lose their limbs, but neither did. We think they may have just been telling them that as an extreme worst case. There is hope.

Yup, knee replacement in 2007. During a six week period, in and out of hospital 3 different times, total of seven days each visit. I caught it between second and third stay, most likely from home health care or emergency room where I was going to get dressings changed a couple times of the week.

Had to get a pic line, think that’s the way it is spelled, straight to heart they say. It was very funny my buddies thought while they were drinking a beer after the evening hunt, I was set up at the table with an IV drip for at least an hour each night, and early in the morning before I went to the stand.

By youngest son got MRSA pneumonia a few months old, when he had complications with a hernia. He almost died. They cultured it, and did a cocktail of IV antibiotics and by the grace of god he pulled through. They did get an infectious disease specialist involved to decide the right antibiotics to use. Almost 3 weeks in Cooks Childrens. I don't think he had MRSA when we brought him to hospital in Waco, but we had to wait so long, and the nurses kept telling us not to feed him, and by the time he got to Cook's he was so dehydrated his eyes were rolling back in his head, and the nurse was telling us to be prepared for him to leave us. Finally got an IV in him and his color came back, and it was like he was brought back to life, but then he came down with pneumonia. Probably could have sued Hillcrest. Surprise, Surpise. We never received a bill from them.

The first time I got it got into my blood stream. Pic line and infusions for weeks. When they put the pic line in they put it in 3 1/2 inches too far and it made some of my valves stick. Almost gave me a heart attack. Then when I was finally clear the pic line wouldn’t come out. There’s a lot more to the story but it’s hard to believe even to those who know it to be true.
                    Prayers for a speedy recovery.

This sounds awful. I’ve never heard of it, is it a staph infection ?

Yes. I've had it three times. Not fun. I believe we all carry it but is dormant in most folks. But then again, that might just be what I dreamt!!!

My friend had it in a hip replacement, they ended up taking out the new replacement and cementing a large antibiotic spacer inside his hip bone. They put in a new replacement hip socket after the infection went away and he is doing fine now. I believe he was laid up for 4 months.

Yup methicillin resistant staph infection. More people have have it than they know. People get a boil or a pimple on them and assume that they were bitten by a spider or something. Commonly it is MRSA. Once you have it, in theory, you are always a carrier.

It is rough. Would not be surprised if they had to remove all of the hardware and irrigate copiously and perhaps leave the wound open for healing. It is a mess. Good luck to OP’s FIL.
