    Lake Tahoe Trip Advice Wanted

I have planned a trip to Lake Tahoe in January. Curious to see if the greenscreen has any advice on travel to and from the airport?

And also anything fun do to beside skiing and spending some time in the casinos.

    Thanks in advance.

Southside for sure. Kirkwood is the spot.

You can rent snowmobiles and tour the countryside.

Hiking trails but not sure if accessible in January. Check out emerald bay. The drive there is really cool/white knuckle experience for my wife and I. Drive on the top ridge of a mountain but great views.

Need to go to the getaway cafe one day for breakfast. It is awesome.

If you like to fly fish the truckee river is a great time. Lots of other great rivers less than an hour drive from there. Truckee is also a cool little town that is definitely worth checking out.

Just got back from there on Monday night. We stayed at Northstar with some friends from work. On Friday we ate at Gar Woods which was ok, but it has a very nice view of the lake. On Saturday, we drove the entire loop around the lake, stopping at several scenic spots. It took us about 3 hours to make the complete loop. Yes, Emerald Bay is a must. It's beautiful! Saturday evening we ate at Moody's in Truckee. It's located inside an old hotel and is a really cool venue. Food was good too. You probably want to make reservations where ever you decide to eat. A lot of the places make you wait outside till your table is ready. In January, that could be a little cold!

On Sunday, we walked the town of Truckee. Lots of shops, places to eat and drink, etc. Overall it was a good trip and we would definitely go back.

there is a shuttle service from the airport (bus) (cheapest). Rent a car or hire a driver. (they typically drive a suburban or similar). We have done all 3 over the years. I prefer to rent a car and drive but weather can be an issue that time of the year (we typically go spring break). bus is easiest but can be a pia depending how things line up with your flights/hotel checkin/out.

Isn't the California side shut down?

                    One would assume Reno/Tahoe.

Either way going to Tahoe from RNO or SMF you will have to go over a pass. January there will be a ton of snow, they usually keep the roads clear but a big storm can drop 5' of snow overnight at lake level. I would call the car rental location and ask what level you have to book to get an AWD vehicle. This will help if there are chain controls on the hiway You can snow shoe in the area. Are you staying on the North or South side of the lake? This year may be an oddity because of COVID. Kirkwood has the best skiing in the area but Squaw Valley is a bigger attraction with shops and such. Most of the resorts are on the CA side and may be subject to the draconian laws of the state. Heavenly is partially in NV and my have better options. There is also Mt. Rose on the NV side. It is smaller but probably will not have the restrictions in place. Enjoy

Flying into RNO, and so far no issues with the skiing. Heavenly is restricting numbers on the slopes so we bought our passes the first available day. Once we bought the passes we had to make a reservation for the days we plan on skiing. We are already confirmed and we will be able to ski those days.

resurrecting this thread because I was about to post the same question to yall.

I'll be getting married on april 10th, then going to lake tahoe for a week immediately after. We're staying at a place to the southeast of the lake near Stateline, NV, called The Ridge. I whole-heartedly do not want to go to commiefornia if at all possible, so I'm more interested in the nevada side. anyone have any recommendations for stuff to do mid April? In particular i'd be interested in fly fishing, or any fishing.

It's been over twenty-five years since I went, but the most fun thing I remember was a guide yourself stable around North Lake Tahoe that let you pick your own riding trails, rather than a pony ride. The Truckee River rafting is popular, choose slow float or faster rapids, and hiking at the top after the gondola ride is fun, but you will feel the thin air. Concerts at the casinos can be good if they are doing that.
