Seattle must do's?

The daughter is on the volleyball team at WT and they are in the elite 8 in Seattle so the wife and I are headed that way Wednesday evening. Should be there 3-4 nights if all goes well. Need some ideas on things to do while we have down time. Have heard its expensive as hell and there lots of homeless folks around. You folks in the know send some ideas my way. thanks

Drive over to the small German town of Leavenworth. Nice drive through the mountains and Leavenworth is a really cool town. We skipped a day planned in Seattle to go back there a second time.

Pikes place, Rocco’s pizza (very good), pricey but a chopper ride over Seattle and snoqualmie falls is pretty cool. Snoqualmie falls and Salish lodge is fun to just go to rather than helicopter ride and cheaper. Visit the gym wall, see the troll. Stay in the city as little as possible lol have fun

Yep...we drove to to the top during the fall. Saw elk, silver fox, etc. Beautiful up there.

These two things plus the the Boeing Factory Tour. Downtown is a show in general but i enjoy it every 5 years or so.

My dads whole family moved there in the 70s to work at boeing. We still go up there once every couple years.

This is a good start. The space needle is expensive but it was worth it if it’s a clear day and there’s no line. If you have time, drive over to UW and walk around campus. My daughter goes there and it’s one of the pretty’s schools in the country. Go to the library if you have time.

If you like music go to the MOPOP.

It doesn’t feel like Seattle has more homeless than Austin. I’m sure they do but it doesn’t feel like it. They are there for sure but I never felt unsafe.

I didn’t talk politics but the people in the PNW are really nice.

We were there several years ago in the summer definitely a cool place. I bet this time of year it being close to Christmas it is hopping. Weren’t the entire theme of the town was a German/Bavarian theme?

That’s what we did. Never felt unsafe. It was a good trip. I was skeptical at first but Seattle is a really nice city. I’d go back one day.

I was just there a month ago and didn’t have any issues with the homeless. We stayed at the Renaissance Hotel Downtown. We walked to Pikes Place Market which was pretty cool. We did the Ferris Wheel by the water and just walked the street by the water. I really wasn’t interested in the Space Needle but could see it from the Ferris Wheel. If you’re planning a trip to Mount Rainier most of the visitor centers are closed and some of the roads like the one heading to reflection lake was already closed.I would take a ferry to the San Juan Islands. We did a whale watching tour and the company I did mine through stops at the end of October but if you can find another tour that still runs it was an amazing experience.we wanted to go to Leavenworth WA but didn’t have enough time. I’ve heard at Christmas it’s awesome. I posted some photos in the Photography part of the forum titled Pacific NW Orca, Seals and Landscapes.

Piroshky Piroshky Has great pastries. It’s 3-4 doors down from the original Starbucks (in Pikes Market).

Rainier has gotten a lot of snow already and a lot of roads are closed for the season.

The Crab Pot on the water front has great seafood.

The Ballard Locks is a cool thing to see also.

Some of the roads in Rainier may be closed, so check on that before driving out.

People often overlook in Olympic National Park to the west of Seatle (on the peninsula) in favor of Rainier. My wife and I love Olympic NP. It's about a 2.5-hour drive and ferry ride from Seatle. The ferry is cool, the drive is scenic. Head to Port Angeles, there are a couple of good eats there. Then drive up to Hurricane Ridge from there. Beautiful views. If you have more time you can drive to the west coast and check out the Hoh River and the awesome pacific coast, but it's another 2-hour drive probably. You shouldn't be snowed out of Olympic yet.

Seattle is a pretty cool city if you stay in the nicer parts (like any city). All the places mentioned already are must-sees in the city. There are a couple of cool parks in the city that overlook Elliot Bay.

Got back home last night. Not a huge fan of the city, but I'm not a fan of any big city. We tried several of the recomendations on this post. Pike place market was OK. Saw them throw the fish, saw the gum wall, the original starbucks that had a line at least an hour long to get in. The market is just a big tourist trap but was pretty neat. Not impressed with top pot donuts. They were just donuts. Had a very good bagel at rubensteins. Took a drive out of the city one day and went to Snoqualmie falls. It was very pretty up there. They had about 8-10 inches of snow up there which a local said made the falls look even better. This was my favorite thing we did. I liked the way they have the baseball and football stadiums right next to each other with the city skyline in the back ground. Everything was over priced. Gas was $4.98 a gallon and a 12 pack of beer was $18. Had a $22 dollar burger!

The homeless situation was not as bad as I expected from the original responses. I did see a lot of homeless camps, but most were not on the side walks. They had tents set up around town. There were quite a few old campers trailers and motorhomes parked permanently on the side of streets with homeless living in them. There was more graffiti than I have see anywhere. Every thing imaginable had been tagged.

I was pretty disappointed at the first game we went to. All the teams had gone to some local elementary schools the day before the tournament started to visit with the kids. Those school came to the games on Thursday. Before the first game during the national anthem, the kids were mostly all sitting the talking during the anthem. There were a couple of people who I assume were teachers sitting with them and not paying attention. 2 of them didn't even bother to remove there caps. One of the tournamnet workers tried to get the teachers and kids to stand and be quiet but she was ingnored.

On a good note, WT won the national title Saturday evening.
