Rough day today. People can be cruel.

Not really sure I know why I’m writing this but I just feel compelled to do so. Today I got a call for a loose horse. I’m a Livestock Deputy for Harris County as many of you know and these calls are “routine”. As I was driving down the road she was suppose to be on I noticed at the end of the roadway on the shoulder, she was down. I drove closer and realized it wasn’t her head I was looking at with pointy ears, it was her hip bone. She was so thin the point of her hip looked like ears from a distance.

I pulled over and approached. She perked her ears up and lifted her head. I have seen some skinny animals in my day but this was absolutely cruel. She had foundered in both feet and someone thought it appropriate to SCREW her hoof wall back to the hoof capsule to keep them from separating. This is like putting self tapping screws directly into your nail and into your finger if your nail is coming off.

I stood her up. I tried to load her but it was apparent she wasn’t going to even make the trailer ride anywhere in her condition much less get in it. I euthanized her right there in the grass. As I stared into her eyes, right before I sent her across the rainbow bridge I almost couldn’t do it. I lowered my hand for just a second but knowing the outcome, immediately raised it again and did what I’m asked to do.

I struggle with it as I sit here. I think mostly because I’m so angry I had to put her down in such a dump of a location. It was clear the people in the area didn’t deserve to own horses. I wish she could have had a meal and some water and walked pain free in a pasture for just a moment. She laid there for days with no water. Unable to stand with her hooves that way. I’m just ate up with anger over how someone can be so cruel.

I left and cried the whole way home. I’ve had to put animals down many many times but today, I saw the worst of humanity.

I hate that. It’s a funny conundrum we’re in as hunters. We run sharp sticks through animals and high five and share blood trails and broadhead damage, etc. but being intentionally cruel to animals is something that really gets to me. People who tape dogs mouths shut and drop them off or in this instance starve an animal to death almost. If you’re gonna kill an animal, kill it. Don’t be an *******.

So sorry you had to deal with this. I can’t understand people who treat animals like this. I’ve seen this sort of thing in Fayette County and it seems like nothing is ever done to these people. Horrible!

Yes ma'am. People suck. My mom runs a dog rescue and it's pitiful how some people treat animals. No doubt about it. She gets some dogs that are pretty bad off. Some people ain't got any respect for life of any kind.

I'll say this, if you're gonna just drop a dog off in the middle of nowhere at least have the balls to put a bullet in it. Don't make something suffer.

I had called my mom for a little perspective. She said “when she looked at you for that split second she knew what you were about to do. And when you paused, she knew how much it hurt but asked you to do it because she knew you could”.

I knew it was the right thing to do but Jesus, I wish I didn’t have to.

Most people that do stuff like that to animals will end up hurting or killing people before it is over.

I've had to put down several animals that were suffering. None that were done intentionally, most from old age, injury, or birth defects. It doesn't get any easier. I know it's hard to see sometimes, and hard to swallow, but you did her a huge favor.

I feel for you maam knowing what you are going thru with this. I was called numerous times in the last 20 years to put a horse or cow down that had been hit by a vehicle or injured some other way on the ranch. Nobody wanted to do that chore so I took it upon myself. People asked me how I could shoot those animals like they meant nothing to me. I explained to them I did not enjoy it at all and that I could not stand to see them suffer anymore is why I did it. Just remember that you were easing the pain that should not have been there to start. Sometimes the end is a blessing in disguise.

I hope they get tracked down and charged though I doubt they will.

At some point they are going to stand before The Judge and answer for that though

This exactly! I have had to do it a few times, it sucks and sucks a lot worse when it is due to human neglect instead of an accident.

Thank you for doing what you do yet remaining with a ton of compassion. It’s far too easy for people in your line of work to become calloused!

Your heart is in the right place. And you did the right thing. Blessings come in many forms. Some are unpleasant. And we may not know why we have to go through such agony at the moment. But it is all part of His plan. Sometimes we learn later why we experience such unpleasantness. And we can learn and use what all we have been though to carry out a better will. It may have been better that you found her, than some child who had to watch it's life suffer away.
