    DFW hunters hunt Ft. Hood?

    Hey guys,
anyone in or around the concrete jungle hunt Ft.Hood?
I was thinking about giving that a try for next fall. Car pooling would be a great option and would help me sell it to my wife Days in the stand are even better when shared with a buddy on the way home.

If anyone is interested give me a shout.

I would like to. I agree carpooling would make it easier. I just made a contact the other weekend with someone who works on base.

            Ft Hood

I'm retired military and went down to FTH this summer and purchased my permit. First year. I was camping at BLORA and wanting to drive as short of a distance as possible. So I scouted out the areas close to the park that I could bow-hunt in October, rather than look into the archery only areas that are several miles from BLORA.

My issues- the Post isn't as liberal with range openings during archery season as they are during gun season.

Second, the weekend range openings are supposed to be posted prior to Friday, but may not be posted until Friday. Yes, you can call, but it's another step. Another three-day weekend with unknowns.

Third, North Post archery only areas weren't open much.

Fourth, the areas that are unguided shotgun/muzzleloader have permanent stands feeders, claimed for several years. I don't give a crap if it's first come-first serve, but I don't want to have a confrontation at 4am because I'm either in or close too someone else's stand. The Army Corps of Engineers actually excels in this aspect.

I can overlook and work my way around a lot, but finally, and most important. Mid- October, TA36, still cool morning in my stand well before daylight, around 0730, what should I hear loud beating on wood. Ft Hood hunting guides (guides is a loose term, more like escorts) getting ready for the youth hunt. Hammering something onto the stands (numbers I expect), trimming limbs, etc. I can understand that, but not as an excuse, you had January thru Sept, but not on my weekend. As per the "Annual Guide 2008-2009", definition of Volunteer Deer Guides "Guides must set an outstanding example of personal conduct and sportsmanship". In comparison, if your not drawn for a general season guided hunt, you can't enter into a guided only area during normally gun season, the same respect should be afforded to archery hunters. Have your stuff tight prior to September. As I walked up in camo and a bow, "are you huntin", here's your sign. The argument ensued, after I called area access control I realized I was in a losing battle, no rules against it.

Checking into area access is a pain, but the least of your issues. Lots of hog sign and I was almost run over by several. Another item, you can't use a bicycle or ATV, yet you can take your truck wherever you are willing to drive it.

Positive- for archery, you do need to qualify. It's not that big of a deal, 2 or 3 at 20 yards, 2 of 3 at 30, in a paper plate.

I had good luck with deer around the ammo holding areas, where there is no guided hunt at all, and no blackpowder/shotgun. But there are no hog in that area.
