The 90-day validity is in case you you get stuck in a country for whatever reasons (health, injury, etc.). If you travel on 9/1 and the passport expires 9/5, but you break a leg on the trip and require surgery or something that extends past the validity date, you're screwed.

I renewed mine by mail back in January. Had it within 3 weeks. Not sure about now.

Same day renewals went away during COVID. Another example of our government using COVID as an excuse to not perform the duties we've entrusted them with.

On your way back, fly into Mexico then just walk across.

I'm in Costa now and had the same issue. We live in Dallas and no appointments for 6 months. We went to Kaufman County and walked right in same day- had my new passport back in 3 weeks. The 90 day thing is legit. Makes no sense.

Well Crap. I don’t have 3 weeks. Got like a few days.

Follow up on trip. No issues with passport. But I will be getting a new one asap.

I went with the fastest, most expedited service rthat you can do through the mail here recently -

renewal cost me about $200 and still took 5 weeks.
