If you could describe your ideal hunting setup and location anywhere in North America to kill the best whitetail of your life, how and where would you like for it to happen? I’ve been watching YouTube videos of Canada, the Midwest, south texas and Mexico. I just don’t have the desire to hunt the bitter cold in Canada for those true northern giants.
I think mine would be 20’ up an oak tree overlooking an oat patch during the second cold front of the year hopefully around November 10th. Something about being in a tree again sure gets me excited for cold weather. |

I either want up in a tree with snow and a awesome blood trail. (never tracked blood in the snow) or in East texas tucked in a tick forest, and the buck runs in from the road hunters for refuge and little does he know im there.

I kinda liked hunting out of a truck on the Faith ranch. Didn’t get to kill a trophy but my son and I got to kill some 140+ “culls”. Actually we were doing them a favor taking them out of the herd. Biologist at the time is a friend of mine.

I’m thinking eastern Colorado or Kansas or somewhere in Canada. Riverbottoms and corn fields. Wide open country. Lots of glassing.

A warm drizzly and foggy Texas November morning in a creek bottom along a trail tucked behind a bur oak in an elevated position on top of a ladder on a cut bank with a GrandDaddy Longlegs on my head.
A fat Texas spike walks out at 15 yards during a cool spike season and I havent killed with my longbow all season. Id love to stalk Alberta deer. |

22 foot up in tree in pike county Illinois. Huge tree on creek coming in strip brush less than 100 yards wide that acts as natural funnel between two large farmer fields.

I didn’t see near as much game as in Texas but when I did they were usually a brute. I miss hunting the big timber in the Mississippi and Louisiana bottoms along the Mississippi River.

I would be sitting 15’ up in the fork of a nasty cottonwood, recurve in hand, guarding a major creek crossing in Iowa. Would be the first day or two of November accompanied with the first hard frost of the year. That’s the dream……

Nov 18, 2020 at about 5:15pm in Kansas, I shot a gross 190" with my bow. Came in following a doe, squared off with a 140's 8pt in the field, then gave me a shot at 14 yards. Watched him cross the field about 300 yards coming to me. That's a day of hunting I'll likely never top, and I'm good with that.
BUT!!! If I could pick and choose it my way. It would be on property I bought, in East TX, with average for the area bucks, that I brought to their top potential thru habitat management, tree plantings, burning, discing, food plots etc. (The fun part of hunting ![]() Sent from my motorola one 5G UW using Tapatalk |

Same State I'm in. I've seen deer of a lifetime on camera and in person. Know where they are still or where they were killed. Open range 170+",180" and 3, 200"+ both whitetail and mulie.
But I don't deer hunt. If I do I ain't the one shootin. But if I were to I'd hunt Oklahoma. As for set up. From the ground. I ain't a squirrel or a raccoon. I ain't gettin up in no tree. Last edited by okrattler; 08-24-2022 at 01:17 AM. |

Mine would be driving around with my dad in La Salle county on a cold mid December day. I hope we would be crushing Miller lite, smoking cigs and listening to Marty Robbins. Looking into a pear flat and see the biggest red horned mf’er you have ever seen standing with a doe. Ground check him in a split decision. Then crush one more Miller right after to celebrate.

Sitting on an old railroad tram with a couple of walker hounds hammering away pushing a big in closer by the minute.
What can I say I grew up in east tx. Lol But I will be the first to admit the best thing they ever did for the deer population was close it to running dogs. |

Up in a river bottom tree stand, early midcoast Texas rut right after the very first cool front blew in just cool enough to make me need a light long sleeve shirt.
That’s my “actually experienced it, could easily happen again” one for me. Ideal Texas one for me would be Deep South Texas brush, packing a 30/06 some rattling antlers, shooting sticks and catching some December rut action. Always wanted to be Midwest somewhere, on a big green field full of doe in a tower blind with a big ivory antlered Midwest whitetail coming out into the field. Bristled up and strutting heavy. Last but not least. Saskatchewan or Alberta Canada, cold as all get out, hunkered down hunting a big chocolate horned 200-300 lb brute of a whitetail. |

Hard to follow that ^
South Texas ranch big enough to have deer you’ve never seen Dark drizzly day and cold enough to let them keep moving. Prefer a tripod on a rise to hear all the action and elevated enough to see over the low brush. Watching hot scraps in a secluded opening below. Killed my first “trophy” buck that way. 40 yrs ago |

I've always dreamed of chasing Early season velvet Montana Whitetails, sweating sitting in a tree on a trail all day. Velvet is so cool to me, and the chance to stick a monster whitetail in that terrain in velvet! Man, it's got a hold on me.

I have seen big bucks in a few areas, most were in south Texas, but much of south Texas ain't what it was when we were hunting it. I have seen some nice very nice bucks in Val Verde county, then multiple outside of New Braunfels, that were quite impressive. But there is an area, up in the pan handle, has both whitetails and mulies that are huge. I would probably go for that area as my dream spot to hunt, and hope for a monster muley and a whitetail. I don't get very excited over whitetails anymore, don't mind shooting a large whitetail buck, my world does not revolve around trying to get a shot at a large whitetail.

As long as you are hunting with friends and family it doesn't matter what the setup is. Just don't want any neighbors for miles. |
