I've also heard if you pour buttermilk on them and let it dry before you sink'em, algae will start growing almost immediately.

Have not heard buttermilk but raw eggs painted on

Probably either would encourage algae growth

The deepest part of our pond is 12 feet. I have 2 them in 10 1/2 to 11.
