can any of you guys versed in CNC routers tell me what you think a good price on this would be. says it has been lightly used and comes with X controller, spindle and all other original parts. I have been wanting one, still in research stage. does not include laptop

Resale seems to get pretty good on this stuff. It being assembled will save you about 8-10hrs!

What bits come with it? Those things add to fast in cost.

I haven't looked at xcarve very much.

For the 1000mm X-Carve you are looking at about 2500 new with the bits, taxes and what nots. It all depends on what "lightly" used means. Looking at the set up, I would say $1000 - $1500 would be a killer deal, and I would haggle if he is asking more than that. As for the set up, Like mmoses says, you are saving a bit of time there.

Thanks for the replies. They want 1400. I was thinking a bit less. I know they don’t want to ship and they are close to me. I would imagine one could take a while to sell I want one to play with and see if it is for me. This seems like a decent entry

From what you told us - that is a fair price. I would close the deal

Still looking in the DFW area. I reached out to neighbors on Nextdoor app to see if they have a CNC machine. If I don't get any hits, my wife's aunt and uncle have a slip at the Lakewood Yacht Club, we're due for a visit. That would knock out two stones with one bird... Thanks again for the offer. I'll shoot you a PM when the time gets closer!

Just picked up a Shapeoko xxl and found this thread. Some great looking projects!

Any words of wisdom or lessons learned while putting it together are appreciated!

I don't have the Shapeoko, but take your time!!! Don't rush it! Just enjoy the process. I took 3 days to build and set up my X-Carve. Then have fun

when the machine messes up, its probably your fault!

Check your belts and wheels before you start running the machine.

Check your zero and retract heights too!

Did you get it to do something in particular or just mess around with?

Check out ben Myers. he has been a big help to get started. https://www.youtube.com/c/MyersWoodshop/videos

Latest little project. Corn Hole boards with brand engraved. Customer is going to finish off with stain/epoxy to fill the engraved areas.

Looking at getting a CNC soon. I know the sky is the limit with tooling. For those that have a machine already would this be a decent set to start with? I know there will be a learning curve and tools can be damaged. Or should I steer away from a kit and get a few basic bits and go from there.

You are getting a big boy one right?

I think these are a must.
Flatting bit(for your spoilboard)
1/4 Down cut
90 degree v bit
1/8 down cut
compression bit(if your cutting plywood)

toolstoday and bits & bits are two of the big ones.

like making a rifle stock from scratch or engraving on one?

Both are doable, making from scratch will take lots of programming.

Thanks for the reply. My machine isnít big but more of a commercial model than a hobbyist one.

Got some tooling from Vortex ordered and just received a call this morning letting me know the cnc has been built, tested and ready to ship. Hopefully I can get the laser to work to do simple engraving on small things for Christmas. Iíll have my hands full learning. It comes with its own computer loaded with Vetrics V Carve Pro V 10.0

My 1st completed piece.
1-1/8" thick solid 1 piece mesquite with 1 live edge

There were a lot of lessons learned and too many machine hours to list.

1/4" endmill roughing pass = 4.5 hours
1/4" ball endmill = 4.5 hours
1/16" tapered ball finish pass = 10 hours

Very nice, you have a lot of hours in that one. What were you feed rates and spindle speeds for cutting that?

1/4 rough downcut- 16k rpm, 40ipm, 0.1" step over
1/4 ball - 16k rpm, 60ipm, .06d" stepover
0.075" tapered ball - 12k rpm, 75ipm, 0.006" step

I'm most likely totally incorrect on the settings but this has been a good starting point on learning time vs quality.
Stopover and feed play a huge roll. Also I don't have an 1/8 ball so I was trying to accommodate that. Tool selection will be increasing this week. I was setting up the machine to run at night while we slept. In the morning I would clean and turn it off and repeat the next day after work.

I seeyou are using a Laguna machine, you didnt get a Shop Sabre?

Have had mine running for 2 weeks now and from not knowing nothing about cnc nor computers I feel i am getting somewhere. I tried some 3D carving but itís meh to me, takes a lot of time. What do you sell something for that has 15-20 hours of machine time?

Shop Sabre lost my business after sending me 5 emails a week for 12 weeks and they couldn't make the financing happen before year end. I was able to get my DBA and RBFCU generated funding same day. Found this Laguna on Craigslist for 60% off it looks brand new.

I have no clue on pricing something like this. Looking at plywood stenciled signs selling at $35, I would say $60+ would be good on these 3D reliefs in solid hardwood.

I finally used mine for something other than pinewood derby cars ...
