That is super interesting considering state regs do not allow you to use archery equipment during muzzleloading season, somerville WMA being a state owned area you would think they would follow the state rules. that they are allowing the archery season to be extended.

Whats to stop a Game Warden from writing a citation for bow hunting in extended muzzleloading season at Somerville, just curious? Its not like the draw hunts where they issue eveyone special hunt permits and tags if you shoot a deer, on those they can basically set their own rules. For example the Bastrop state park antlerless/spike hunt they're conducting this week, even though deer season is over now for that county. I wonder if the somerville WMA folks aren't mis-understanding the state regs, or maybe they can set their own season dates/weapons restrictions since this is a APH permit required area?

You can probably park on the road at #4 and just hunt off of the back of the truck. Even if the water level is down, I'm not sure how far in you can walk.

Anybody driving 2 hours to duck Hunt Somerville should drive 2 hours the opposite way. Huge lack of birds right now.

Honestly interested of pics of said limit from the past couple days on walk in Somerville wma land. There have been a decent amount of ducks this season but this past week has gone down hill fast with the little wind weíve had and no cold weather

Saw zero deer, 5 ducks(4 in one group and 1 by itself) ....not sure what kind. I need to take up duck hunting next year! Very windy afternoon so Iím going to hunt down a Chicken Fried Steak than back at it hunting in the morning. Nails creek at Box 1 was flooded again....amazing what a little rain can do to that creek and saturated ground out there!

We fished the creeks today.
This morning sounded like a battlezone at WMA. Seen numerous flocks of 8-10 gaddy flying this morning.

Saw 2 does this morning. Found small 5 pt skull near creek. Did not hunt this evening. Next weekend may be good but 15-22 mph winds and in the low is 29 degrees lol....may be a cold one but Iíll be there with you for the last weekend of deer hunting....may not be there all day though lol. Itís still really wet and flooded out there at both Yegua and Nails. Iíll be tearing up the white bass after January 20th....as long as it doesnít flood again.

So here is what I don't understand. They let us use a muzzleloader season as an extension to a general season, but we cant's take antlerless deer in Burleson county. Which is allowed according to Burleson's regulations.

I wrote to that hunt@... address and got this obviously out-of-the-book reply:

=============================================
"Somerville PHL is only open for Buck white tailed deer harvest till Jan. 20th. There is antlerless WTD hunting on Somerville at this time.

Sincerely,
Public Hunt Staff"
=============================================

You can legally take does in November 22-25 if hunting within Burleson's limits. Even though in the PHL book it says you can't.

So I'm pretty sure the same applies to the muzzlleloader season. Can any of you guys check with someone who really knows this stuff?

PHL has it's own rules to sum it up... we've never had the extra doe days although next season we will! This is the first season they have let us hunt threw muzzleloader season it's new to all of us just follow regulations and say thank you parks and wildlife lol

You are incorrect. It doesn't matter on what land private or public you harvested an animal. You abide by regulations of a county where that animal was killed. PL book uses the most strict regulations out of 2 counties Somerville PHL is on to avoid confusion and that's understandable. It doesn't mean you will get in trouble for following county rules though. With a muzzleloader is a bit tricky due to weapon difference. That's why I asked for help.

And don't get me started on saying thank to them. I don't know about other PHL's, but Somerville has been neglected for years. Trails are almost non-existent, access roads are in horrible condition, there are no overpasses to access hunting lands when creeks get full, damaged/destroyed bridges don't get fixed, boundaries are not marked well, etc.

This land was a flood plain well before it was a hunting area so I would say thank you for allowing us to even hunt it. They could care less about the hunters. The purpose of the land is for flood control.

Neither of the WMAs (Nails or Yegua) are in Burleson Co. So your complaint is sorta invalid...

The Hunting God's are against us. Supposed to be thunderstorms Friday again. I hope some of you can get out there during the week and make something happen. Good luck to everyone.
