I’ve had great results with mine, just be sure to adjust the guide and bars for the knife.

No reason the basic work sharp can’t work for ya. Just don’t roll the tip through and finish with the polishing band and be done

I have used a Warthog for a number of years. Works well and fast. Only issue is for some of the older models new stones can be difficult to find.

I buy the stones on Amazon. They work pretty good. Tip is once finished using the grinding side flip to the steel side and drop the angle to the next level higher to knock the edge off. Example grind at 25 degrees and steel at 30 degrees. Made huge difference for me.

Thanks! I reread directions and see I’ve been using the v-sharp wrong for 2 years.

Chef choice edge select 120
Electric with 3 wheels and blade guides. I can’t sharpen a knife to save my life but this thing will make a knife shave in 5 minutes once you have the right angle on the edge.
$120-$140 bucks. 2 diamond wheels and a felt wheel.

Here ya go--and keep one in your butt pack and you can touch up your edge in the middle of a field dressing if needed. I keep a sharpening steel in my knife box and when I go to work, it is in my back pocket so I can hit a few licks when needed. I usually make it thru a deer without re-touching the edge, but not a hog.

Which is why I use a box cutter for hogs. Blades are 10 for $1.50 at HF.

Box cutter is the easiest thing to use on hogs. The only time you need something bigger is on splitting the pelvis. I can usually find it with a box cutter on a deer, but for some reason the hogs are harder to hit, at least for me.

We use box cutters too. Starting with the hooked blades, they go just under the hide.

If you make at least 3 vertical "stripes", it makes it much easier to "peel" one.

I am certainly not an expert but I have been able to get a sharp edge on my knives using a KME knife sharpener. I also use it on my broadheads.

I have the electric Worksharp and love it. I bought the above one based on the recommendation here and that is a great little sharpener. I've had it for a while and have not really used it. Got it out the other day and am really happy.

After using 4 knifes to clean one deer last week I was bound and determined to spend however much I had to on a sharpener. I have a worksharp and user error I'm not in love with it.

I ordered one of these yesterday and tonight I've taken several knifes from rounded blades to shaving.

So... Thanks!

i cant hand sharpen a knife to save my life. even with a lansky kit, i can get it mediocre enough to skin a deer 1/3 of the way, but then the rest of the deer i have to drag it thru the V shaped sharpener every 7-8 cuts.

this past oct i got the work sharp knife and tool sharpener (ken onion edition). since its a belt sharpener, it puts convex edges on your knife. my last buck i skinned the whole thing without stopping to sharpen. the honed edge comes out mirror perfect too.

i also used to to sharpen my axe and hatchets, an old rusty machete, and my limb loppers. and a broadhead!

Outdoor edge and a big pack of blades is going to be your best bet.

We clean somewhere around a hundred deer a year, I still use a 'real' knife sometimes, but I have a Warthog and a honing rod nearby at all times.

I sat and re-sharpened about a dozen of the outdoor edge blades last night with the warthog and the honing stick. The only problem is that the little thumb stick won't let the blade get very deep inside the warthog....but I mainly care about the tip of the knife anyway.

When you go shopping for a honing rod, there are a bunch out there....for camp use, I want a steel rod, but the ceramic ones are faster and better for hard steel knives (but being ceramic, it will break if you drop it)

Get a Spyderco Sharpmaker. $75 on Amazon.

Watch the youtube video on how it works.

If you can hold a blade vertically, you can sharpen a knife and shave with it. I bought mine back in the 80's and it still works perfectly.

I used a warthog a few days ago at a local archery shop and it took way too much metal off- maybe it had course stones in it but I had to come home and work it on the steel to get it right! I think it’s a great system though but I would get some fine stones

That is the exact opposite of the issue I have. Maybe I need some courser rods for mine. It takes forever to remove enough metal to sharpen a dull knife with mine.

The Warthog works pretty well. It will do what you are looking to do. My main complaint is that you have to buy different grit rods separately if you want them and they are not cheap. And swapping rods out and turning them over could be an issue if you lack dexterity. Also it will take some time to get the angle of the blade set with the Warthog. it doesn't put much pressure on the blade so it removes metal pretty slowly. If your knife is very dull it'll take some time to get it sharp. Where the Warthog shines is it is quick and easy to touch up a blade. Once you have it sharp you can just give it a few licks periodically as you use it and keep it touched up easily as you go. I keep one on my boat for touching up fillet knives and it does a good job. If you are looking for a one motion sharpener, this one will do it. Overall I like it.

I prefer the Work Sharp guided field sharpener, it is more compact and does a great job. Much faster option. I sharpen with it and touch up with a steel here and there as I use the knife. The only problem is the two direction thing. If that's an issue the Warthog would probably be a better choice.

For you guys that have trouble with a flat stones.
go slow, use very little pressure, clean stones often. Go way longer than you think you need too on the med and fine stones. Finish out with a good leather strop/belt

Warthog works great for me. I use it for my kitchen knives mainly. Once a good edge is established, it only takes a a dozen or so swipes to freshen up the edge.

I have numerous stones and wheels and can easily hand sharpen a good blade but the warthog is fast and easy to use. If I need a better edge then my stones and strops get used.

I know this doesn't answer you question, but the easiest for me is to not let it get dull. It takes a little longer but stop every 5 minutes and give it a lick or two on a diamond rod.

Our Cheifs Choice 3 stone counter top unit gets a blade stupid sharp in a couple of minutes. We always mention to our guests that the knife by their plate is very sharp.
I am a Lansky guy and our hunting knifes are medically sharp...

Stones if you’re willing to learn.

Warthog, spyderco, & Wicked edge are easier and work very well.
None will remove the amount of metal that a Work sharp will.

Warthog is good. Work sharp will chew a blade to a nub if you have a hard time with dexterity. Especially on the work sharp you are supposed to pull the knife up before it gets to the tip or you will pull back and extremely sharp butter knife tipped pocket knife. Knowing what I know Tiger, the warthog or something similar is a pretty good option for ya.
