Outdoor fire place or fire pit?

So I live in a residential neighborhood. We are going to build a 16’x26’ covered patio, all hardy and tongue and groove ceiling. Concrete already existing. Argument between my wife and me is, should we build a fire place or a fire pit? Fire pit not under the cover, at the other end of our concrete slab which is 40’. Doing a kitchen as well so don’t want it cluttered.

That’s where it would go and that’s where my wife wants it.

I’m betting that patio slab was not built to withstand weight of outdoor fireplace. So I’d go w/firepitThis is one I built last week, had 8” slab and piers

Also price is quite a bit more for fireplace versus firepit

We built the slab with intentions of building a fire place.

It looks like you answered your own question before you asked!

                    I'd go with the fireplace.

Fire pit.....I have had both and the pit gets used alot more. Nothing better than sitting by fire pit with your feet propped up and a cold one

Your HOA may have a say in it as well as the fire dept. A free standing fire pit may not be allowed. In Austin if you have open flames at night... don't be surprised to to see the fire dept. called on ya.

They both have plus / minus's

Outdoor fireplaces are nice, but they’re relatively similar to pools. You’re not likely to recapture the cost.

I go fire pit cause I like the camp fire feeling to it and can be done at low cost.

I’m doing heat lamps hung from my ceiling on my back porch and fire pit out back.
