Ran an arrow thru one that looked a lot like this many years ago. He & a buddy were chasing deer and came right to my grunt call. Never had a dog do that & it all happened pretty fast. The second one steps into a shooting lane, wondering what the ruckus was all about. Started to draw back on him and though, 'wait, is that a dog?". I let the second one go and debated over the next hour or so if I'd shot a dog or a coyote. Convinced myself it was a coyote. Got down & walking up to it was even more convinced, until I checked his neck for a collar - yep, has one! Felt kinda bad, but can't change it. Drug it way across a field and dumped it in the next woods, in the hole left from the rootwad of an tree that'd blown over.

Was talking to the landowner months later. He was complaining about some dogs that had been running around the farm for months & being dangerous to his grandkids. He said one disappeared, but the second one kept at it. He wasn't sure who owned the dogs, but finally got tired of it and killed it - problem solved.

He took it out & dumped it in the exact same spot I dumped the 1st one! He said he was shocked to find the other one already laying there!

Then I told him about the 1st one.

We both just laughed and he just said, good & thanks, glad he only had the one to kill.

Super ironic that the final resting place for both of them ended up being the exact same spot - and that landowner had a lot of land too.

Sometimes things just work out.

All of the rest of the 'coyotes' I've killed were really coyotes!
