    Prayers up.

Always carry basic survival gear every time you go afield. One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is a signaling device like a whistle. Your phone can fail you. Carry at least a space blanket, fire starter that works in wet conditions, basic first aid, compass, and water. Enjoy the outdoors but be careful out there.

It wouldn't be that hard to do. Some country looks the same everywhere you look and it's even easier to get turned around in fading light. When you realize you really are lost and panic sets in I'm sure it's all downhill from there. Panic sets in and then you get even more lost. 5 miles is a long way from the truck especially when it's cold.

It's very easy to get lost in heavy snow or fog. No landmarks visible to see where you are. Wonder if he had a compass on his phone or if it was too dead to work.
Sad deal, Prayers for the family.

Y'all keep saying "not worth it for a hog".

It ain't worth it for a 300" whitetail either.

                      That had to suck.

                      RIP.

                            A REAL COMPASS TOO !

An emergency blanket, protein bars, whistle, bic lighter, lifestraw, and compass should be in every pack you own PERIOD. $20 is the difference between being dead or alive, most times less.

A charging device for your phone is easy to carry too.
