Best bait for dog proof coon traps....

What works best for you? I seem to be doing slightly better with marshmallows than cat food, but it's a small sample size. One thing that I have learned is that ants love marshmallows.

We use them in our feed pens so it's usually corn or protein pellets that get stuffed in them. We will set several of them in one feed pen and it's not uncommon to have one in every trap. I love those traps they work great.

Corn and protein work the best. Marshmallows are good but get messy. Sardines can catch non-target animals.

1 can of tuna and mix with chocolate syrup. Seriously it works, they love it. I caught 4 in 4 nights with one trap.

We are at 97 coons since 5/15 with marshmallows and we don't trap during season......maybe 2-3 of those have been with corn. We get doubles all the time. the thing I like about marshmallows is we catch them even with corn on the ground. We don't seem to have an ant issue when we bait at night and pick them back up.

Never had an issue with them being messy unless we were lazy and left them out all day. The cooler nights out west even in the summer keep the MM fine. We set them at night and check them in the am. if there is a MM left it comes out and gets tossed. Traps get rebaited at night ...

Banana moon pies worked good last summer when I trapped.

I am using dry cat food with a fish oil trailing scent around tanks. I don't trap at our feeder. The main reason I am using the dry cat food is because when we lived in Franklin, we had a little cat show up at our house that we started feeding. He did not stay long so I had a bag of cat food to use up.
