    What ammo for pheasant?

Going on a pheasant hunt in December. One of us is hunting with a 20 ga, one with a 12. What size shot and shells are best suited for each?

Wild birds or planted birds? Over dogs or just pushing cut crops?

Nothing smaller than .308 I'd think.

          Anti aircraft!

Kidding I prefer 5’s. But 4’s kill them dead and 6’s too if they are flushing close

#4 shot is what I have used. That and arrows.

This question first- it makes a huge difference. I've been a few times to a fancy-schmancy shooting preserve/club in Kansas where we shot planted birds over dogs. I shot high brass #6 in a 20 gauge and it was almost overkill. Most guys with 12 gauges were shooting #8 and it was plenty. Wild birds in stubble or CRP fields is a different story.

I use #4 or #2 for wild birds.

Wild late season birds you might want to go to #4 with mod or Im choke.

For tame birds #6 dove loads and cylinder or IC.

Worlds apart between late season wild birds vs tame.

                            A semi auto 20 ga loaded w/ 3'' high brass #4's or 5's.

You will know if you are hunting wild birds. They are already bailing out of the field at the first sound of the truck.
