It is definitely a problem. We had a couple of culverts washed out till we poured a proper cement bulkhead.
Our bridge is built over a 12’ deep creek bed
And a 20’ span. We drove metal pipes under the span and welded beams.
After many years of the year around creek getting out of its banks, it has never washed out underneath the ends of the bridge.
I wonder if the answer might be a serious bulkhead with large rocks place upstream on each bank

Good luck and let us know how you did it.

Def going to need a bulkhead of some kind!
The Fema page is very helpful. Going out to property tomorrow to start an assessment.
Thanks again for everyone’s input and ideas.

Had the same deal. Keep patching it. Came back culverts gone. 30’ hole and 100’ length. Track hoe and 3 new 36” x40’ culverts. **** ton of clay, rock and grass seed..not cheap but I was cut off to 1/2 my property. Last few years have been tough...about 7k. I wish I had better news man

If you use the bags of sackcrete for your bulkhead, drive pieces of rebar through them to keep them from sliding off.

We used an old railroad car tanker.

Good recs so far. Could also think about using gabion baskets for the bulkheads with concrete footers.

We have an old flat rail car. Not sure what the correct name for that would be. it has been there 20+ years.

Lots of bridge ideas, once again I have no concerns with bridges that much.
Really wanting to see the bulkheads and retaining wall ideas.
I can build a bridge no prob, just curious about the creek bed and ways to retain very erosive soil.
I don’t want to build the finest bridge in all the land, just to watch it eventually fall into the creek.
Once again, I know some of you have dealt with this particular problem and solved it.
I do appreciate everyone’s time on this matter .
                                Keep them pics coming !
                                Thanks in advance .
