Well, after years of hoping and a few successful hunts on cows, finally connected with a bull this morning.
Saw him walking through the brush along with 3 other bulls and managed to get in front of them and cut them off. He stepped out at about 80 yards staring right at me. The only thing I could see in my scope was his shoulder and just as I was about to pull the trigger, a buck steps out in front of him and decides to stand there for what seems like an eternity. The buck finally walked off and the bull hadn’t moved an inch even though I was sitting out the open with no cover.
Put the crosshairs right on his shoulder and let the 30-06 rip! He bucked but took off running like nothing had happened and saw him pair up with the other bulls as they ran away into the brush. I knew my shot was solid, but of course, you have the sense of doubt when they disappear into the brush. Picked up a blood trail that lasted for about 20 yards and then blood was gone. Thankfully the freeze had burned the grass and it wasn’t so tall because I had to choose a direction that I thought he had run in. I chose the right path and found the gray hump sticking out of the grass about another 50 yards in! Between my cow in January and this bull, the freezer is full!
