    Whooping cranes photos

Highly endangered at 849 in the world

Wife and I went early January and hung around in Lamar/Goose Island SP. I wanted more and went a month later and went out on a photography charter. Weather didn't cooperate but it's winter along the Aransas NWR coast. Here are a few shots plus the link to the gallery. All shots this year with Sony a7R III and the Sony FE 100-400.

Bill's Crane Gallery There are also Sandhills in this gallery.

Shot taken during a territorial dispute. Four birds were actually involved in the dispute

Family unit with juvenile, no. 30 is the male

Primary diet item is blue crab, they eat about 80 per day.

Pair at Lamar on private land, taken from 8th St.

I remember about 8 years ago or so A friend of mine and I were guiding ( a group of Houston Dynamo players of all people) on a speck and snow goose hunt out on the Garwood Prairie when a pair came in and landed about 300-400 yards away in another pasture. A few minutes later, here came a the green Game Warden truck creeping along. He would stop and glass the birds and then he would glass us. Very soon after he showed up, he parked and came tromping across our pasture. Never checked guns, never checked licenses, never introduced himself.....nothing. He simply said " Those are Whooping Cranes and y'alls hunt is OVER"

Yeh, they get pretty testy about these birds. A couple were killed toward Beaumont a couple of years ago. It didn't go well for the young man that did the shooting.

Thanks, Tyler. You ought to go do one of these charters sometime.

                          Curious about range and lens?

Mike, the lens is a Sony FE Telephoto 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS. I would have used a 1.4X teleconverter also but the weather was really overcast most of the morning. Distances varied from 35? to 50 yds probably. The camera mentioned in my OP is 42 mp so I can crop pretty good and keep some detail.

Very nice. I was just curious as the range and equipment needed to get shots like those. Again, very nice.
