      That's what it is. I've never seen a black one. Up here they're a different color phase,same species.

                    The first hognose snake I ever saw, when I was little kid, was black like that, it was at least twice that length. All of the ones I have seen since, were mostly brown and between 14" long to about 22" long.

                          The Eastern Hognose gets bigger than the Western Hognose. I have an Eastern Hognose at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, Kansas. He was 48 5/8".
