Surf always depends on the wind. If its blowing like crazy don't bother with the surf head to the jetties.

If you're new to the surf free lining some shrimp or soaking croaker with a leader works best. Soft plastics work well too, and spoons if the weather allows.

Thanks for the tips. I am generally down in Port A twice a year visiting family, and I learned a lot last summer fishing the surf with some trial and error, but I strictly used live bait. I've seen a lot of guys posting about DSL, and I'm definitely going to pick some up. Do guys mainly use those under a popping cork, or do they just do a quick retrieve with a lot of movement?

1/4 oz. jighead, no popping cork, and vary your retrieve. Start slow, let it sink all the way to the bottom, then work it back slowly just off the bottom. That’s how I catch most of my fish in the surf. Sometimes, they’re up high though. If you see fish hitting bait on top, cast towards it and bring it back with a fast steady retrieve, maybe one or two twitches. Play with the retrieve, they seem to change how they want it.
