7 mag or 30-06 but a 243 win works fine.

300 win mag. Flexibility and choices in bullet size. Power for larger animals and more energy down range for longer shots. Nearly every manufacturer makes each model in 300 wm.

30-06 or 300 whinny just for the ammo array.
But…a big 7mm would be fine also.

6.5 PRC, which I have, is basically the same. The problem is finding ammo! I've killed elk and mule deer with my 270 WSM.

300 WSM, just because its easyer to shoot than a 300WM

I couldn’t decide between 300 win mag and 7 rem mag so I got both. Then I added a 6.5 prc too lmao

I would like to try a 28 Nosler, on some mulies, I would bet it is a great muley cartridge. But would be very happy with a 7mm Rem. Mag. Either of the calibers would work for elk, but I would prefer a larger bore and heavier bullet, than is commonly used in a 7mm. I would prefer a 300 to 33 caliber magnum caliber for elk. A 300 Win. Mag. 300 Rum, 300 Weatherby would all be great choices. but I have wanted a 8mm Rem. Mag for years. If you could find a decent selection of bullets in 32 caliber, I think that would be my favorite elk caliber, that or maybe the 338 RUM.

I realize both critters have been killed with a lot smaller calibers, but when I do get to go on hunts, for something I don't get to do very often, I would like to increase my chances of bringing something home.

Now if I lived in Wyoming or Montana, and only had to drive 2 hours or less, to be in prime elk or mulie range. Then I would likely choose a smaller caliber. I would likely use a 7mm Rem. Mag for everything.
