I use the victor electric traps. They’re great and they have an indicator light that lets you know whenever you’ve got a victim.

I use those electric traps. Caught / killed dozens of rats with them. More effective than snap and glue traps and not toxic to your dogs.

I bought one of these about a year ago and it works well. In fact on Tuesday my wife said she thought she saw a rat on our back porch so I baited the trap and set it out. This morning I was letting the dog out and heard the beep that lets you know you caught something. Sure enough it was a big rat. The nice thing is there is no mess with an electrocuted rodent - you just dump it out of the trap into the trash. This is the one I have - you can either plug it in or use batteries:
