looks like Chert\Flint rock to me, so yes they used it. but only for special occasions.

Doesn't look like it to me. Find another rock and strike the rock on the left and on the edge. That will let you know for sure.

Those look water worn. Most likely spent some time in a river or stream. Hence, the smooth rounding edges like river rocks have.
