This may have already been mentioned, but you don't need a bunch of fuel to increase the speed of a vehicle moving in space. The scientists are able to use other planets/moons' gravitational pull to slingshot vehicles into having an increased speed. There's still minor bursts for adjustment and pulling the vehicle back out of the gravitational pull but this has been a known process for a while now. When it's time for final impact, they don't need much fuel for a final bump in speed.
