    Personal Best - Mason County

It's been a great season so far. My dad took a tall 8 and we've shot 16 pigs so far on 230 acres.

I've been fortunate enough to shoot 30+ whitetail in 21 years bowhuntig and I've never lost one. I've shot some pretty decent bucks, but I've never taken the biggest buck we had on camera.

We had this 9 point show up in September. Usually after opening weekend, the bigger bucks tend to disappear until the rut. I think it may be due to the big freeze, but our live oaks didn't produce acorns this year. This guy hung around and visited one of our feeders pretty regularly over the past week.

This evening I caught a glimpse of movement about 10 yards away of being directly down wind of me. Fortunately he walked to 15 yards in front of me. There were two does and a younger buck with him. I drew back when he went behind a big limb of the post oak I was in. He stepped out from behind the limb but turned towards me. After holding for 10 seconds or so, he turned to where he was slightly quartered towards me so I decided to put my pin directly on his shoulder and let it fly. I watched him run to about 70 yards and he was beginning to slow. I raised my binoculars and I could see my arrow on the ground had a ton of blood on it.

After 30 minutes, I started tracking and I couldn't find blood. That's when the doubt started. After 40 yards of no blood, I picked up his tracks on a recently cut sendero and started finding blood. About 50 yards later, I found my personal best bow buck.

    I'm estimating he is 18 to 18 1/2 inside.
