Recent threads have left me curious.

When someone shares bad news or maybe even good news why does one say they're sorry to HEAR that.
By saying it that way aren't we subconsciously telling the person sharing we don't want to hear it?

If we say I'm sorry, doesn't that just give a general one size fits all response?

Wouldn't I'm sorry for blank, be a more empathetic way of responding?

Again I don't know just throwing this out there.

ME? I prefer to use I'm sorry for.....
