Removing a member from a deer lease

yeah after the season we found out a member killed an extra trophy buck and didn't tell anyone. the lease agreement was for one trophy each. as soon as we found out i told him, so that was pretty straightforward. he had to settle up with the landowner too, and he was not happy. but he created the situation.

i had the same, and was very disappointed in how some people act around killing deer lol

I have had to do it a few times. It does not matter how you handle it. In their minds you will always be the bad guy. I would just suggest having someone with you. Tell the straight forward and then don't worry or think about it again.

Have done it 3 times in the past...
1. don't do it alone. Have a co-manager with you.
2. Have a written copy of your lease rules/contract to reference.
3. Give the specific reason(s) and point out the violation(s) in the rules
4. I do it at the end of the lease year unless it is an immediate termination offense.

5. Give them the standard time to get personal equipment/gear off the property. After that time has passed they need to understand that if they tresspass onto the property, that they will be filed on for criminal tresspass.


If you don't have a written set of rules/contract, Good luck. Hope it goes well for you. If it does get ugly, escort the offender off the property and change the locks on the gate/access to the property immediately and notify all other members... (in writing).

I would recommend changing out all locks in camp/gates as well.. Never know these days

First he tried to make excuses and cry that he wont do those things again. That didnt work so then came the tantrum. Sorry, but you got to go. He got plenty of time to get his stuff off.

We came back a month later to check things out for the new year, and he had damaged some of the stands and feeders and took some more I guess he liked to balance the tally sheet in his way of thinking.

Take someone else with you is really good advice.

But yes, rules are rules! Depending on the offense it may warrant immediate removal. I ramrodded a lease for several years and fortunately only had to kick a member off 1 time. I simply told him he wasn’t invited back, that we were going in a different direction and when we needed all his stuff gone.

This is always done after season so they don't shoot up the place but with plenty of time to get their stuff off before you go showing it to new people.

Make sure the season is over. Our group told someone on the last day of the season so he could take his stuff then as he lived a long ways from the lease. He shot two big bucks on the way out of the ranch. Another of the group saw him drive into the locker in the nearest town with the bucks in his truck. Never an easy task. Good Luck!

It can get really tough especially when it is one of your closest friends! For me it ended up in a very broken relationship for 21 yrs but all is good now! New locks and firm out date are a must!

With a full season ahead, had he been given any warning and see how the year plays out?

I know at some point, some of you guys have had to have told someone they weren’t welcome back on a lease for the next season. There’s a chance I may have to do that next year with one that’s just always creating drama. How have y’all done it in the past, for those of you that have? Just tell them they aren’t welcome back and they have whatever amount of time to get their stuff out?
